Could This Be True? Toyota Rumored To Only Have Sold One Prius In China So Far!

First, the number of cars on the planet has just passed the billion mark. Second, almost half of the new growth is in China. Third, Toyota managed to sell only one Prius in China last year. That's right. The world's most commercially successful hybrid car has found only one buyer in the fastest growing market. SUV sales, by contrast, are surging.

No wonder we are choking. Despite all the promises of green growth and reduced emissions, traditional car sales are accelerating, while efforts to shift towards "greener" hybrid and electric vehicles are stuck in neutral, particularly in the place where it matters most.

I'll bet the Prius outsells the Audi RS5 by quite a considerable margin. The RS5, much like all RS models are pathetic sellers, but your blinkered eyes only focuses on Toyota 009.

as communism fades away in China, the free market dies in the USA, government intervention, universal health care. It wouldn't be surprising to see the USA as being more socialist then China in a number of years.

I'm going to ignore all the idiotic political posts above and stick to the idiotic 009 headline. This UK Guardian article used an unsupported anecdote about the Prius to illustrate how China is experiencing automotive growth while not embracing cleaner technoligies. Of course 009 turns it into a slam against Toyota. Ugh.

If I just became newly wealthy, as many Chinese citizens have become, why would I buy a Prius over a(n): Audi, Buick, BMW, MB, Lexus or Ferrari?

Yes I know that these cars are not in the same class, but if you can afford a car in China, usually two - three times the cost in the US, why get a cramped sub-compact.
