What Car Or Truck Would YOU Use To Battle Hurricane Irene?
As I await the full wrath of Hurricane Irene, I am hearing the wind pick up and whistle outside my window while specks of rain accumulate on the glass. Although I wasn't too sure how serious this Irene was, it looks like we're going to get hit pretty hard in the New York Tri-State area.
That's because this puppy's dumping anywhere from six to 12 inches of rain in a 24-hour period. That's pretty much unheard of.
With that said I've gotten prepared for this type of difficult situation with plenty of car porn and an inflatable raft. If the storm surge washes away my home at least I know I can post stories thanks to the flotation device and a little spy ingenuity.
All kidding aside though, I was racking my brain for a little bit:
What would be the perfect car to deal with a hairy situation like this?
(THINK) You'll probably need to ford a stream or two, have some off-road capability and it needs to take a beating.
I have several options in mind:
- Hummer H1
- Jeep Wrangler
- Mercedes-Benz G-Class
- Lexus GX
- Toyota 4Runner
- Volkswagen Touareg
I'll leave my answer for the comments, but until then...
What say you, Spies?

Suburban,Denali XL or Excalade (AWD of 4wd)They have room for lots of supplies and baggage and can carry up to 9 passengers in style. Also they are way more stale in windy conditions than the Jeeps.

I had a feeling you'd go that route.
I would take the Wrangler, jacked up of course!

I must agree, I would go with the Raptor, although the Jeep is more capable off road, the Raptor is heavier and would stand up to the hurricane better than the 4,000.lb Jeep, a Powerwagon or Hummer H-1 would also be good, although I would rather just take a quick vacation away from the hurricane.

The Rally fighter is awesome! you are plugged in Joe lemon! It would be very good evading the hurricane, but to be in a hurricane I would take a heavier truck like the H-1 or a Power Wagon, or the Raptor.

not one of the new ones, one of the older ones with solid axles with the selectable locking diffs would be great with 35in tires with an old man emu 2in lift.

Probably just the car I have, Range Rover Sport - which can wade through up to 30" of water with the air suspension all the way up, and if driven without a lead foot can get up to 24 mpg on the highway
But, if I didnt already have that, I'd go for the Toyota Landcruiser, for better reliability.

When are we going to get off this Toyota reliability thing. They are the most recalled unreliable brand there is.Give it up.The Hummers will kill the Rovers and Cruisers in wading water and off roading.

The Land Cruiser is far from the Toyota recall issues . The Land Cruiser family still has the legendary reliability Toyota was known for . This is visible with the United Nations in which they bought almost 12 thousand land cruisers over the past few years and if you happen to watch the news almost every car you see is a Toyota Truck . I had a friend working over in the middle east and all they drove off road were Toyota trucks . You may disagree with me , but that's alright because in the end its your opinion , not mine .

I was a big fan of the older LC, the new one is a nice suv with some off road capability, just nothing like the old one, especially if you want to modify it a bit, that is where the old one shines, try and take the new LC on a tough trail like the Rubicon without the trail making team that all of the manufacturers use to say that they made the Rubicon trail, the old one would make it with the selectable lockers, the traction control would wear the brakes out and use a lot more gas, and when you need wheel spin the old lockers shine compared to the traction control that belong on sports cars.

Truck man , while that is true , the older Land Cruisers are much more capable due to lockers and higher ground clearance + solid axles up front. While you will have to add 35 inch tires , lift , front and rear lockers in order to cross the rubicon in the newer models , they still do have the legendary toyota reliability .
Toyota does still produce rugged workhorse land cruisers ( 70 series family ) and they are sold around different parts of the world. The Land cruiser you are referring to ( the newer models 100 series and 200 series ) have lost the front solid axle , but for what they are and what they were made to be . They are still considered very capable and in some markets are still offered with locking differentials. You wouldn't compare the off road abilities of a brand new land cruiser 200 series offered in USA to say a Jeep Wrangler , because they are not ment to compete with each other ! How ever a diesel 70 series would be able to match it , if not surpass its abilities , too bad they aren't sold in the US .
