Was He Right? Former VP Dick Cheney Says He Opposed Bailout Of General Motors
Former Vice President Dick Cheney says he opposed the decision to save General Motors Corp. from collapse in December 2008.

In a new memoir "In My Time" published Tuesday by Simon & Schuster, Cheney says he disagreed with President George W. Bush's decision to rescue GM with a $13.4 billion bailout in the final days of his term.

"The president decided that he did not want to pull the plug on General Motors as we were headed out the door," Cheney wrote. "Although I understood the reasoning, I would have preferred that the government not get involved and was disappointed — but not surprised — when the Obama administration significantly increased the government intervention in the automobile industry shortly after taking office."

Well Dick, had your administration done a stellar job of running the country, there would be no way a one-term policial-hack Senator from Illionis could have thrown the Republicans out on their asses.

You're irrelevant Dick. Your administration was out-of-touch with the nation. It doesn't surprise me that you would have made another bad decision.

I assume you believe the current administration is more in touch with the country?

I don't know about the "one-term political hack" part, but you're right on Dick being irrelevant. And he sure is angry...always running off the mouth about something. He and his friends ran the United States head first into a war that it is now so locked into that Afghanistan might as well become the 51st State. Doesn't he have some grandchildren that need a bedtime story, or a dog that needs to be walked? Why is he always up in the media giving his political advice? Why doesn't he do like his former boss is doing and only speaking when he is spoken to? Gotta respect Boy George for that.

And to answer 009, he is not right. He has never been right about anything. It's okay to send American men, women, boys, and girls, half way around the world to die for a country that never gave a shit about them until they met their demise. Yeah, I said it because we all know it's the poor and the unwanted that hit the battlefields. Yet, it was so wrong for the government to invest in the jobs of American people by bailing out GM and Chrysler (lest we forget that they got money too). The Chrysler bailout cost the American tax payer US$1.3b...total. Yet, Afghanistan is costing US$1.33b PER MONTH. And nobody is concerned about that. Political tribalism always comes before the demise of a nation. Bin Laden may have lost his battle with the US, but he is surely winning the war because he got Americans to become polarised against each other, leaving their nation to rot. Wake up and take stock of your country, people. Work TOGETHER to get it sorted out.

In a nutshell, the Republican neo-cons are always running around talking about "taking personal responsibility" for actions.

The (in)actions of Bush over the previous 8-years (during which time he repeatedly ignored requests to meet with various Detroit3 CEOs) meant the democrats could have run just about anyone against Bush, and won. The fact that the Reps were dumb enough to choose McCain just made it even easier. So take the personal responsiblity DICK... You sucked while in office and nobody wanted your kind a second time around.

Stop whining and boring us with your "what-if" scenarios. What-if Bush had established an energy policy like Bill Ford asked him to do in a full page ad run all over the country?

Cheney was the greatest VP ever. He should be running the country. We need more GOP members like that back in office. Agree?

I would like to point out to you that in the case of Arthur Andersen v. United States, Arthur Andersen was absolved on any wrongdoing, and the conviction- which put 28,000 people out of work- was UNANIMOUSLY overturned by the Supreme Court. Ever heard of prosecutorial misconduct?

As far as the University of Phoenix thing; the last time the study was done (admittedly mid-1990's) the Center for Economic Education found that those those label themselves as "conservatives" have significantly higher levels of economic understanding than those who label themselves as either liberals or moderates. This was true of every single sub-category they analyzed. I am quoting Marilyn vos Savant in this instance, and I dare you to call her a University of Phoenix graduate. Although you would be right in calling her a college dropout. In her case, however, that is a moot point.

Gates did indeed. I find that those with extremely high IQ's, I am not necesarily speaking of Gates here, often drop out of college. Marilyn vos Savant (highest IQ ever recorded); dropout. Christopher Langan (arguably, highest IQ of an American male); dropout. Actually if you think about it, it makes perfect sense.

"Didn't Bill Gates drop out of college (Harvard)? And doesn't he now run the world? ;)"

- Not even close. The Rothchilds have enough money to make Bill Gates look like a welfare case.

It's Rothschild, not Rothchild. A few years ago- okay like a decade ago- Scientific American (or was it Discover?) had an article which basically cited them as the most inbred family in Europe due to the family patriarch making it lucrative for them to intermarry.

"Hmmmm...Last time I checked, Bill Gates was ranked #2 on the 2011 billionaires list. Where are the Rothchilds? "

- BSBB you got a lot to learn. Bill Gates is the 2nd wealthiest taxpayer. The Rothschilds along with a couple of other families invented money. They are bankers and are not on that list for whatever reasons. Your lack of knowledge is remarkable. Do some reading up on the Rothschilds.

You are just as clueless as eveyone else. Nobody knows how much the Rothschild family is worth; not even you. They are very private. No single Rothschild is worth more than Bill Gates, this is definite, but it is possible, not necessarily likely, that the family is in total.

That is different game, however. First you have to even define what is a family. The Rothchilds were phenomenally wealthy for centuries, and wealthy people marry two kinds of people; beautiful and / or other wealthy people. The Rothschilds are related to people with last names like Astor and DuPont as a result.

Gold isn't king. In a famine you can't eat gold. And where is the gold based currency? Are you going to give a gold bar to the gas attendant for gas? And readopting the gold standard limits the amount of currency that would be available. There wouldn't be enough to go around. Only the wealthy would have it. Which is what the GOP wants in the first place. And when the GOP has regular folks who aren't wealthy fighting for their cause (and against their own best interest), it makes it easier for them. America is screwed.

The problem with the gold standard is that the usa currently owes more now then the value of all the gold mined ever!

How could that work?

Captain heart-attack has zero chance to run for president. Even he has to be smart enough to realize that.

This is just something to appeal to all his AM talk-radio fans and sell his crappy book.

What was dumb about McCain? The guy was completely out of touch with his home state for one thing... (Sure I live in Detroit now, but I lived in AZ for years in the early 00's) Go ask the average AZ Republican how they feel about "amnesty"... I by average, I don't mean owners of construction companies or other businesses that want cheap labor. Look at the drug wars goin on in Mexico right now! McCain wanted a more open border with Mexico!

In fact, to hear McCain supporters tell it, being captured in Vietnam was the guy's biggest accomplishment. That's a tremendous sacrifice, but it doesn't qualify you to be President. You want my opinion? The Republicans knew they weren't going to win in a background of mortgage failures and credit crunch (and that credit crunch impact on the auto industry), nor the first serious black candidate, so they let sacrifical McCain (who had been a pain in their ass anyway) run in 2008.
