Obama's New CAFE Standards Forcing BMW Back To Four Cylinder Engines

Obama's New CAFE Standards Forcing BMW Back To Four Cylinder Engines
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, facing higher fuel-efficiency requirements under the Obama administration, is bringing four-cylinder engines back to the U.S. 12 years after it quit offering the slow-selling option.

BMW says it will offer a four-cylinder engine in its Z4 roadster and 5-Series midsize sedans when they begin arriving on U.S. dealer lots by October, and the company says more nameplates will get the smaller engine with the Munich-based automaker's TwinPower turbo. BMW dropped the engine from its 3- Series line in 1999, when gasoline cost $1.14 a gallon.

So! Performance isn't lost.

Personally, can't wait. When you consider the 2011 BLW 528i with the 3 liter inline 6 gets 22/32 with the 8 speed auto, and BMW has said the new 2.0 twin scroll gets between 15 and 20% better efficiency, that's amazing. Combined with a more useable torque curve and peak horsepower coming in earlier, it promises to be a great car for those who want a balance between performance and efficiency.

Who cares if it a 4 cylinder. Europe has survived quite nicely with the 4 cylinders and I don't think love for BMWs has declined because of it.

Agent009, your idiocy and wanton hatred of President Obama is eating you up.
Has it ever occurred to you that the Europeans have various tax mechanism in place for engines with high cylinder count- but your selective ignorance and political bias won't allow you to acknowledge that.
What a dross.

BMW has few 4-cyliner engines either in gasoline or diesel selling in Europe and Asia for many years. 4 cylinder engine is NOT new to BMW. Instead of "Obama's New CAFE Standards Forcing BMW Back To Four Cylinder Engines", the title should be changed to "Obama's New CAFE Standards Forcing USA GO FOR THE WORLD GREEN STANDARD".

No mention in this article that manufacturers who sell less than 400,000 units in the US are excempted from higher CAFE standards? Bascially a loophole created by strong coastal dealers. Search "German exemption, CAFE".

---------------

"It looks like some carmakers could be awarded a partial "get out of jail free" card for the new national greenhouse gas rules announced by the Obama administration in May. The EPA and NHTSA won't issue final rules until later in the fall, but it looks like carmakers that sell less than 400,000 cars a year could catch a break this time around. Apparently, up to one-quarter of the company's fleets would get a four-year exemption. That would allow companies like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz to sell high-powered M, RS and AMG models without it affecting their fleet CO2 emissions numbers.

The proposed rules would give the automakers less of a break than the California rules, which would have exempted their entire fleets for seven years. Nonetheless, these automakers would still have an advantage over a company like General Motors which competes with some of these cars with the likes of the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V."

Based on your comment I would actually say ignorrance is bliss, did you even read this before you posted it. In no way did Obama have something to do with BMW switching to 4 cylinder models new engines arent designed in such a short time. Your clearly just another lemming that jumps at the sight of the idiotic article headings, and play right into this refusal to learn how to right articles that are at least decent, which seems even worse when you consider all this elementary poster is doing is commenting on someone elses article. Sad all the way around, oh well such is ignorrance.
