Buick Aims At The Germans With The Regal GS, But Isn't It Better Suited To Take On The Japanese?
When General Motors first announced that the U.S. would be getting some sort of hotted-up Regal, we were told it'd be just like the Opel Insignia OPC that continues to light fires within the hearts of European enthusiasts. That car boasts a 325-horsepower 2.8-liter turbocharged V6, six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. We've had the chance to drive the Insignia OPC and will say without hesitation that it is, in fact, the bees' knees.

Imagine our disappointment, then, when we found out that the Regal GS was fitted with a 270-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Oh yeah, and it's front-wheel drive.

I think Buick is taking share from Lexus. Buicks look like American Lexi.

It is an Opel Insignia. And I boosted 1911, Caraficionado and 222max Nostradamus because it needed to be said! Dumb headline.

In Germany, Opel is not considered in the same league as MB, BMW and Audi.

We are the idots, paying through the nose for cars that are considered mundane in the rest of the world, such as Mercedes, and BMW. BMW are both taxi cabs and police cars in Europe. In fact after we returned to the U.S., I was in a dearlership picking up my new Trans Am, when my then 11 year old daughter yelled across the showroom floor, "hey dad, how come they sell German taxi cabs here", as she pointed at a new Mercedes an older couple were looking at, with a salesman. His look: Priceless. My point, even the Germans laugh at us as we worship at the alters of BMW and Mercedes. They are just cars too them. I like the Buick. I saw one exactly like the picture, this summer, on I-90 heading West, near Rapid City, SD. There was another Buick behind, but I was East bound and could not get a closer look. I can say, as soon as I saw it coming toward me, I knew what it was. It looked good at speed. I can't wait to drive one...now does it have a HUD, like big brother?

Couldn't agree more Mustang953. As an American who has traveled to Germany, you expect to see streets crowded with MB's and BMWs. Instead you see base-level Fiats, crappy French cars, and oddball stuff from Asia that wouldn't meet US crash standards.

Sure, I did see MBs (as taxi cabs) and in stripper trim levels they don't offer in the US. Saw BMWs about as often as I see them on the streets of Detroit... That is, rarely.

I noticed better drivers, but mostly because you need to work and save for years to get a car in Eur-topia, thus youthful stupidity is prettty much behind you. Then again, I saw a lot of bad drivers, but they looked like they were driving a sedan full of dynamite to a rival mosque, so probably not "real" Europeans!

Eldard, I agree with your conclusion and even gave you a boost!

Now tell me what happens when a socialist, protectionist government is granted free access to import into a capitialist nation so fanatic in its ideology that, rather than sin against a commandment of Milton Friedman, it is willing to allow the collapse of American manufacturing? (With apologies to the great Republican Pat Buchanan.)

Again Eldard, I agree with you! That must be a record. America's politicians (on both supposed sides) were so corrupted decades ago that the newest generation doesn't even require bribes to function as tools for the elite. It's now just a part of their inbred DNA.

But that still won't stop me from pointing out their treachery to the American people. They never gave me any money for a campaign, or a soft job as a lobbyist. Why shouldn't I keep mentioning our one-sided trade policies until they give me some cash? :-)
