2011 Audi A8L vs. 2011 BMW 750Li vs. 2011 Jaguar XJL vs. 2011 Hyundai Equus - Road and Track Comparison!
In the glamorous days of Hollywood past, movie stars would take their Delages, Delahayes and Duesenbergs—invariably the long-wheelbase variants, yet often with intimate 2-place seating—and motor to the desert community of Palm Springs, there to live the sporting life and luxuriate poolside in view of a snow-tipped San Jacinto Peak.

In these more egalitarian times—at least as we’re inclined to live them—the wheelbases have been reduced and the practical seating increased. Luxury and the sporting life are still aspirational, though, and Palm Springs continues as a desirable destination.

Why no Lexus LS460L? Guess they all didn't want to compete for 2nd best?

Lexus didn't give them an LS to test. They didn't want it coming in last! :-p

I actually like the LS460/L.

"Why didn’t we include a Lexus LS 460 L on this trip? Essentially logistics; the same reason there’s no Mercedes-Benz S-Class either. We chose to pit three of the newest here, the Audi A8L, Jaguar XJL and Hyundai Equus against a class standard, the BMW 7 Series."

If you two actually read the article before opening your mouth you would know that they did Not include the Lexus LS or MB S-Class is because those two has been out for awhile. And the next generation MB S-Class and Lexus is coming soon. They only want to compare the recently new models in this comparison.

And you should know I was KIDDING. That's what the ":-p" was for.

I read the article.

It was the editors' choice of cars to test against each other, I think they should have included the S550 and LS460L.

Lexus will always have the crown of being the 1st one introducing an 8 speed transmission, everyone else is following now, just too bad they didn't put that in the new GS350.

too bad indeed, even a "cheap" dodge sedan has one now. lol

All of this is a maneuver of hyundai they want people think and put them at the same level, so sorry but this never happens even when they copy and paste the best and leaders like BMW and Mercedes, they always have years and years of light of technology, safety system and he most important BRAIN for years to build cars. This is so ridiculous here in Miami they also sell theirs cars in Braman BMW and now they have Braman hyundai lol they also have to sell cars beside the leaders brand ha ha ha this is so ridiculous. I think they want fame and they try to create this at any cost.

The 7 series won in a Motortrend comarison, and a few other in the states, and has won quite a few in Europe. You just never hear about them, b/c autospies only posts articles with Audi wins.

People shouldn't argue about any of the cars here: they're all good and they all have strengths and weaknesses. That goes for every single car in this class. This is the elite of the automobile industry and there are few weaknesses and mistakes here.

Everything else like design and performance is completely SUBJECTIVE and personal tastes and opinions apply here.

The Jag, and BMW look the best in this group.

"What's the Equus doing here? It looks like an over-stuffed Maxima."

And the Jaguar XJL looks like an over-stuffed Audi A8 (hint greenhouse).

The cars that should have been tested are the ones that will be crossed shoped and have similar price. Most Jag, Audi, or BMW shoppers will not think of buying a Equus. But the Lexus LS and Acura RL should be in the ring. Do not buy argument about design cycle of LS being older. That is the point. Hyundai is gunning for Lexus. Neighbors have a RX350 and a Equus. The Equus looks very good.

Saw the Equus commercial with the mand driving while the supposed wife is sitting in the back seat. It goes to show the refrigerated? middle compartment and the remote control for the rear reclining seat with massage features. However, the camera angle clearly hides the fact that in order to do this the front passenger seat hast to be pushed all the way forward. You would never know from the external angle of the vehicle since they max tint the windows. This is hardly what you want to show off as a luxury liner. Congrats to Hyundai for getting somewhere, but that somewhere is not close to the Audi A8, BMW 7 or Jag.

Should have compared Hyundai with Lincoln, Cadillac, Lexus and Buick.

Cough paid off cough. A slow/heavy/ugly car wins, pay 100 grand to get the performance of a 40K , road&track has always been a joke nothing new here. I mean really Audi you gave a car at this price 372 HP, a freaking Hyundai genesis has more HP, what exactly does this car have going for it is beyond me. I think the Audi S5 and R8 are two great cars but the A8 is a joke.

Did you even bother reading the article or at least looking at the test results??? The winning entry was the second lighest even though it was the only one with awd. With "only" 372 horsepower the A8 was only marginally slower than the more powerful 7 series with 400 horsepower and left the "more powerful" 385 horsepower Equus in the dust. If you look further you will see best handling figures and fuel economy and looking at the points breakdown the testers liked tons of stuff about the A8.

Well if you enjoy driving with your luxury you have to give it to the Jag. All the others are limosines in comparison. Also with the exception of the Jag all the others follow the same luxury formula. So if you want your luxury to be different go for the Jag.I would.

the A8 is very impressive. just a bit too understated in the styling department. if only they could have brought more of the A5 and A7 greatness to the A8.

and the 7 needs to get back in gear with the next model and refocus on the handling characteristics that have always made bmws stand out.
