Too Fast? Texas Celebrated Labor Day By Raising Speed Limit to 85

The new Texan law has gone into effect; however, a study will be done to make sure that this new speed limit is not unsafe for motorists. In addition, Texas is still working on changing the speed limit signs, so drivers may not be able to drive faster yet in some areas until the signs are officially posted on the roadways.

By 2013, The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing to be done evaluating exactly which stretches of highways can safely have their speed limits increased from 70 to 75 and from 70 to 85. Although the change may not be immediate, Labor Day Weekend has a whole new meaning for those driving in Texas.

It will be interesting to see what kind of statistics come from this "experiment"

Well the terrain is well suited for it. Wide flat straight highways.

I just wonder how well the tires will handle being under inflated (being realistic here), 85 MPH in 110 degree heat for hours at a time.

Not going to happen, too many transplants and too many cars! If you want to drive 85 in LA, you have to do it between the hours of 11:30pm - 4:45am except on the 405.

That's 30mph higher than some East Coast states! Let's make this the national speed limit!!! It's...um...good for the economy when people use more gas and throw away their hybrids and buy muscle cars.

It's good for the economy :) it'll average about 12 hours per year of extra time gained for average people on a nationwide scale, that is over 400,000 years! Now these legislation would also save big rigs an average of 168 hours (about one month of full time driving) per year! The economic payback for a higher speed limit is tremendous.
