Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz plans to expand its lineup of high-end luxury cars and SUVs in an effort to surpass BMW AG's record profit.

Mercedes will add variations of its flagship S-class model after revamping it in 2013 in a bid to become the segment's profit leader, according to two people familiar with matter. The automaker is also considering a convertible version of the $114,100 CL coupe, they said, declining to be identified discussing internal plans

Yes, bring back S350 gasoline and diesel and you'll have a winner.

Great. I'll be pleased to see MBs X1 and 1-series (coupe, vert and 1M) counterpart models.

Going and winning 10 times in 11 years are two completely different things. No one, other than Peugeot has had the guts to confront Audi at Le Mans. BMW was scared away early on, Porsche and Acura had to test out their capabilities with LMP2, one category down from Audi's LMP1. Toyota keeps blabing about entering, but nothing yet. Audi's dominance remains clear. I would love to see the R8 GT enter Le Mans in the GT category as well so we can see complete Audi control after having won Spa and Le Mans!

Go Audi!

Your argument works against itself. You're saying that Audi is dominating everyone, and that all the major players aren't competing with them in that class. The natural conclusion to draw from this isn't that everyone was scared away by audi, the natural conclusion is that if Audi had other major players racing against them the field wouldn't be dominated as much by Audi.

In regards to the Audi-LeMans argument....Porsche is coming and that's all that matters!! Showtime!!

In regards to the original post above....If they introduce more and more models to compete with BMW and Audi presumedly, won't they be less profitable with all the development costs incurred? It takes several years of successful sales to recoup those investments. That's where Audi is right now, I see the numbers they spend and it's second only to MB in terms of R&D these days. With BMW spending most of it's money on incentives to stay ahead of the rest in sales and losing nearly every comparison test in recent history, it's not hard to see what lies ahead for them. Eventually the truth comes out like over in Toyota land. I don't care how "sustainable" others may think they are.

This makes perfect sense, actually. The luxury market has never been as competitive as it is now and that means product differentiation and expansion is what will keep luxury makes competitive and ahead of the game.
