Porsche CONFIRMS 4 Cylinder Boxster Engine Under Development
Porsche has confirmed it is working on a 4-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine, according to “high-ranking officials at Porsche’s Weissach research and development center in Germany.

According to Autoweek magazine, the new boxer engine will be based on the company’s six-cylinder engine and feature a light-pressure turbocharger as well as direct injection. Insiders suggest it will also be offered on the third-generation Boxster and the second-generation Cayman later on in their respective model cycles.

A 4cylinder 2600lb boxster spyder, and a 4cylinder 2800lb regular boxster would be cool.

As usual, some will say that a 4 cylinder is not a Porsche engine, nor a Boxster a real Porsche!
What was the engine and its layout in 1948s number one?

The people who say this are the same folks who claim "A 4-cylinder BMW is not a real BMW."

Morons. That's what they are.

They know NOTHING about the history of their "favorite company" or that of Porsche for example, preferring instead to recite some fanboy bullsh*t from BMW and Driver, excuse me, Car and Driver for example.

Then again, those same people claim they're "BMW fans" or "Mercedes fans", yet they only appreciate M or AMG cars...

Porsche has a glorious history with 4-cylinder engines in both road and racing cars.

I'm sick of all the 4-cylinder bashing in general. A modern 4-cylinder engine is refined, smooth, responsive and delivers good gas mileage. I've rented a few modern French and German 4-cylinders while on vacation in Europe and I was generally very impressed with their qualities.

I don't know if its a Boxster engine or not. But I see this as a last ditch effort to save the company from VW. The merger is on hold. Nobody really wants it anyway. Porsche will have to raise the MPG figures across the line and a 4 cylinder will help. THe new 911's gas mileage helps but a 4 cylinder boxster will help even more.

@ Willis:
I could not agree more with you!!!!!
When I'm talking Porsche with someone, in the precise moment they tell me that a Boxster is not a real Porsche, in that very moment, I'm aware that I'm talking to an ignorant and I rather end the conversation.-

Glad I'm not the only one out there who feels that way! :-)

I've not driven a Boxster. How does the engine sound compared to the original aircooled 911 flat six? Look even the 4 cylinder 912's and 356's sound great. This four cylinder is going to based on the current flat six anyway. I'm glad they are not sharing a VW 4 with the Baby Porsche. As for integration with VW all the auto news media is saying the merger has been delayed due to multiple lawsuit's against Porsche when it was trying to buy VW. Frankly I'm not sure it will ever happen.

Well, instead of comparing the Boxster boxer engine sounds to its air cooled siblings, I'd guess that's better to do so with another late generation water cooled flat unit from Porsche. What I'm sure is that by the time we get to see and hear this new flat 4, it's sound notes are going to be fine tuned at it's best, by the sound engineers at Weissach.

What would a stage I WRX STI motor be like in a boxer? Would it fit?

A four cylinder 2.5L pumping out 380HP? Only in Porsche engineering does it.
