All these new models (not just MB) are starting to make manufacturers lineups as confusing as the electron configuration of some atoms. Quick, someone build the 4s before they get to the 3d o_O

More like: Good job of spreading out the cost of developing chassis and powertrain components over multiple vehicles to reduce the manufacturing cost per vehicle to stay in business.

Actually, BMW has been outselling MB for a while. One of main reasons why Daimler bought, sorry merged, with Chrysler was to lower the manufacturing unit cost of two of their most popular vehicles: E-Class and ML. This is why Chrysler has three cars based on the E-Class platform and the Grand Cherokee is shares a lot of its mechanicals with ML.

Why are you surprised about this? Have you ever looked at MB's line up. They have one of the deepest ones there are: A, B, C, CL, CLS, CLK (E Coupe), E, S, SL, SLK, SLS, R, G, GL, GLK and almost all with AMG variants. They specifically cater to niches. Do you think all car companies should just have a couple of sedans and SUVs and not do anything else?

With the move down market by the big German firms they are assuring that
their primo premium brands (Bentley, Lamboghini, RR, etc) will have more prosperous futures and big profits from expanding their lines (sedans, SUV's,coupes, convertibles, etc etc) as the super rich move further upmarket to separate themselves from the masses..."let them drive 7 series, S Classes, etc etc"
