Have Your Luxury Car Experiences Been More Short Term Bliss Or Long Term Heartache?

Have Your Luxury Car Experiences Been More Short Term Bliss Or Long Term Heartache?
Driving a luxury car should make you feel good, right? It stands to reason that if a vehicle rides better, comes with more gadgets and features, and has one of those status-elevating branding symbols — say, a Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Cadillac — you will enjoy it more than a Chevy.

Not so. You will likely never be happier with your luxury car than during your initial test drive, according to a new study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

“The assumption is a luxury car feels better when you drive it, and you feel better in it, but we had reason to suspect that the story is much more mixed,” said University of Michigan psychology professor Norbert Schwarz, who conducted the study with Peking University professor Jing Xu. “What we find is that as long as you pay attention to your car while driving it, it feels better and you feel better.”

I liked the look and interior feel of the new Lacrosse so traded in my CTS for it yesterday. The CXL was mid range but had a lot of value for money.I think many Luxury brands like Lexus and Cadillac need to pull up their socks.Hyundai and Buick are kicking some butt.I was going to wait for the XTS but decided to trade now and check it out when it comes out next year.

Cadillac not a luxury car? Last time I checked Ferrari uses it's Magnetic shocks!! The CTS-V is also the fasted sedan around the track ever.

maybe magnets dont but you can bet a "dodge sourced navigation screen" makes the Ferrari FF ultra luxury.

Certain luxury cars can keep your interest and be enjoyable over an extended period (BMW's in particular) but DO NOT keep past the warranty and free maintenance period...anything goes wrong and your sweet ride becomes a monetary nightmare ! I had a new S Class once and did loose interest in it very quickly...too smooth, too numb and surprisingly my wife did too. Had a Porsche that was great to drive but every service visit added up to $700 or more...its painful to pay big bucks just to continue to drive your car even if you can afford it. Its the reason I believe so many supercars are sold with so little milage.

Still love the Lexus after 8+ years. Acura not so much.

How hard can it be to formulate a proper question? It's like asking: "was your vacation fun on the first day or was it a horrible 2-week trip?" My luxury car experiences turned out to be long term bliss so it's neither...my 3-Series was mostly reliable and when it did break, it got fixed under warranty without much trouble. Went in once for window regulator and once for check engine light / cam sensor and I had it for 5 years!

So there is no car made in America that can be defined as luxurious by either Eldard or 1911.You might be in for a suprise if you stop by the Buick,GMC,Chevrolet or even Hyundai dealer.Chances are you might not be able to afford many of these cars so why bother.A loaded Lacrosse can run you $50k out the door with features like Heads up display,Magnetic ride suspension and All wheel drive.En Escalade ESV Platinum close to $100k and believe me they are luxurious.Give it up you haters.Even loaded Chevys kick ass. Most luxury features like heads up display were first introduced by GM dont forget that.Even the first electrical starter was introduced by Cadillac.(they were still using cranks before that)

Stupid question, neither. In fact, I love my car. That is why I am on my 3rd 3 series lease and I am about to get my 4th. This will be my 3rd 335i sedan with a sport package.
When I go out of town or have to rent a car, I run back to my car and go for a drive. Nothing drives better, feels more connected and sounds great, inside and outside.
I drive a lot of different cars and I can't imagine driving anything else. My 50,000 miles 335i is so much better than any new vehicle that is not a 335i. I know this from my roommate going car shopping and he wanted me to drive the vehicles as well.

You cannot compare a stripped down rental to your Bimmer.Drive a Infinity G35 or CTS with the same power etc.Bimmers drive nice but be realistic. The next thing Eldard will say is Americans did not fly the first plane.Give it up dude.

Well you made errors in comparison the G35 feels like a stripped down rental compared to the 3 series its plastics are terrible its leather cheap and thin. The CTS is a nice car but thats it its a nice car. Alot of the cars mentioned here I wouldnt considered luxury Acura, Lincoln, Buick, Infiniti arent luxury cars they are nice cars but I wouldnt call them luxury cars. Sorta like the rental categories theirs premium and theirs luxury I would put those cars in the premium category. On to mr German fanatic save the political nonsense Germans make great cars but even if America has supplied many of their technology.....should we really start naming them....

My Caddy was a total nightmare. Governnment Motors is your enemy. Steer clear of GM unless you are a masochist.

GM Stays in Top Spot for Auto Innovation
Fri, Sep 9 2011
DETROIT – General Motors remains the No. 1 innovator among 184 companies ranked by The Patent Board in its quarterly automotive and transportation industry scorecard. It is the third consecutive quarter that GM occupies the top spot.

The Patent Board analyzes intellectual property performance across 17 industries and determines the leader in each sector based on measurements that include the number of patents, impact on the industry and technology and science strength.

“We are busy reinventing the automobile, and we’re doing it sustainably with our customers and the environment in mind,” said Alan Taub, GM vice president of R&D. “One person’s vehicle needs can be quite different from the next, so we’re creating designs for various lifestyles – building in technology that delivers a fun, safe, and efficient ride.”

GM engineers imagine what is possible and turn that vision into tangible advanced technologies that can drive the industry. A majority of its patents are tied to improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Earlier this year, the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index of U.S. patents ranked GM No. 1 in clean-energy patents across all industries for 2010.

German innovation? Let's see they didn't get the atomic bomb first! lol they never had a space program and it was Americans that took their "basic" principals and fixed them to make our rockets 10,000 times better. HMM the only good thing I know good from Germany is Balistol a great lube for my guns! The best German cars use Italian brakes, american or Japanese turbochargers and american or Japanese microprocessors!. What german parts do we use? Spark plugs?
