NEW vs USED: A Hyundai Equus vs. BMW 750i

NEW vs USED: A Hyundai Equus vs. BMW 750i
When it comes to the battle of large luxury sedans, a newcomer has joined in form of the Hyundai Equus. Featuring all of the specifications of cars with six-figure price tags, there is no denying it has tremendous value for dollar.

But you have to take a step back and remember, you can also pick up some pretty hot rides for the same cost as an all-new Hyundai Equus. Take, for example, the BMW 7-Series.

With that said, we're a bit curious. If it was your hard-earned cash being invested into a large luxury sedan, which would you pick up?

The all-new Hyundai Equus OR a used BMW 750i? WHICH and WHY?

Hyundai has introduced a September 2011 Specialty lease program on their flagship sedan the Equus. The $739/monthly payment immediately took me by surprise. Equus list pricing is $58,900 for the Signature Edition and $65400 for the Ultimate. My initial reaction …”That kind of money will get you an awfully nice Pre-Owned BMW.”

Wondering how many other potential buyers would have a similar reaction I set out to find just what is available for the Hyundai list prices.

$ 58,900 2009 BMW 750i

$ 65,400 2009 BMW 750Li

hyundai warranty would be a major consideration.

Catch a used Hyundai via Carmax. Their warranty options are pretty good (but pricey) --- you have the option of taking your Pre-Owned car to Carmax or directly to a Hyundai dealership for all service.

I'd gladly pay $50 for all covered warranty service at a BMW dealership.

This has to be one of the dumbest questions I have ever seen on Autospies (and boy there have been some dumb questions) Used 7 Series BMW or a new Hyundai.
Sorry fellas ( and i'm sure 90% of us would agree) the used BMW would by my choice...if just for bragging rights at the valet stand.

Interesting. If it was my hard earned $$$, I'd take the Bimmer. #badgewhorestyle If they were up for grabs for FREE, I'd take the Hyundai. #truth

Do you mean the same Hyundai Equus that copy some design from the BMW 7-Series, MB S-Class and Lexus LS and to make this car they call the Equss? IMAO....

It a no brainer, I will go with the BMW 7-Series for sure. Who in their right mind paid $60,000 for a Hyundai? LMAO......

I if I have $60,000 to buy a car in this class it will be one of the following car instead of this Hyundai: a use Lexus LS, MB S-Class, Audi A8 or a BMW.

People who buy car in this class buy it for bragging right. Driving a Hyundai is nothing to brag about. Sorry Hyundai you have improve a lot but you're still have a long way to go before you can take on the Big Boys.

The Equus is a nice car even if the design isn't very charming. What matters to Equus buyers is value, features and luxury and comfort. Those aspects are handled very well by the car.

I think the question is spot on. Several years ago none of you detractors would have even imagined Hyundai could build a car like Equus.

Let's apply this same scenario to a new BMW 750i. For $100k, I'd rather have a used Mercedes S63 AMG or an S65 AMG V12.

I’m actually not so sure about this one. The choice would be easier if it were an LS460 vs. the Bimmer, in which case I’d go with the new LS.

The article is dated 2007! Hyundai/Kia have done a 180 degree turn since 2007. I would buy a preowned Hyundai Equus with a transferable 10yr/100000 warrenty over a used BMW!

The questions should be... If it was your hard earned money would you rather pay BMW maintenance and repairs on a used 7er or have Hyundai cover everything on a new Equus?

I know most of us here are driving enthusiasts and very few vehicles beat ze germans as far as the 'driving experience' so it's a hard question. Chances are that if you're buying a 60k car you're not really making a stretch to afford it so you could probably manage the upkeep.

The funny thing is I bet 25-30 years ago if the same question was asked about Toyota instead of Hyundai there would be a similar reaction. Now you all seem to consider a LS as good or even better than a 7 series. Hyundai might not be introducing it in the most conventional way but they are selling cars and before long people start looking at substance and change their preconceived ideas. I guess what I'm saying is in 20 years if you have the 60k+ and are shopping around. You may very well end up being the proud owner of a Hyundai.

@ poot66: The LS is better looking than the 7. I can tell you that.

I never said it wasn't all I'm saying is its a Toyota and not long ago people would cringe at the thought of paying that much for one and would never consider a Toyota to be as high as a Bimmer and now you do. The same is possible for Hyundai.

You think Korea is the only ones reverse engineer? That's sad. So um, Microsoft and Sony didn't reverse engineer the Wii? Oh wait cars right? Everyone reverse engineer something. Heck as quiet as it is kept many automakers brought tons of Sonatas to take back to their R&D. That's nothing new. It's called rivaling. After all, if Motorolla never took Apple's Ipad to their R&D their wouldn't be no Xoom.

Oh yeah about the S. Korean's not buying their own cars? Who cares, after all not enough American's brought their own cars 3 years ago. Causing Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer to die (Saab might as well should be). And GM and Chrysler needing to get a government bailout. Oh yeah huu76back, tell Chrysler to hurry up with Kia's 2.4L engines for the Sorento that's alrady outselling the Journey. Also tell Chrysler to hurry it up with the 2.0L for the new Rio.
