BMW 6-series Gran Coupe (2012) spied at the 'Ring
Further proof the executive classes are fragmenting: our spies have just caught the new 2012 BMW 6-series Gran Coupe on test at the Nurburgring in Germany.

It's the production iteration of 2010's Gran Coupe concept car - a four-door coupe take on the 6-series. Some people round these parts even call it a coupaloon.

BMW 6-series Gran Coupe: the lowdown
BMW is expected to show the new 6-series at the Geneva motor show in 2012, with sales starting that summer/autumn.

I read the M version will get a power boost(580hp+)to differentiate it from the M5. Also with the 6 being lower and wider than the 5 it should improve handling!

I is a BIG car just as CLS, so most likely it will weight 4000 to 4400 pounds.

Looks like this is the size of a 7-series. That makes sense, actually, given that the 6 is based on the 5 chassis which is based on the 7 chassis. So what BMW is thinking is that the four-door coupe niche can be extended into larger sedans' territory. Meanwhile, Mercedes is making a smaller CLS, dubbed the CLC by the media, to fill the small-luxury-imitation-coupe subniche.

It's my belief that the four-door coupe concept will come to define the decade just as tailfins defined the '60s. We have them at all prices and sizes - the CC and Sonata (which allow non-executives to have four doors and style), the A7 (which extends the fake-coupe idea into the territory of wagons), and the X6 and ZDX (which apply it to SUVs). And now this. We have a revolution on our hands. We live in exciting times, people.
