So You Want To Be An Auto Worker? Here Are The Numbers

The pay gap between General Motors workers hired before and after September 2007 will shrink but not go away under the UAW's agreement with the automaker.

UAW workers hired at GM factories after September 2007 -- called tier-two workers -- will see their hourly wage increase 22% over the next two years to $19.28, still about $9 an hour less than that of their higher-seniority, tier-one co-workers, who will receive no raise in their hourly wage through September 2015.

Second-tier workers hired during the next four years will start at $15.78 and work their way up with annual raises to $19.28 after four years.

I though UAW were earning a lot more, in fact 3k to 4k monthly is not much, specially in current economy.

what you don't see here is the benefit.
they normally has the best out of the best benefit there is to have, and those benefit could easily cost 2~3 thousand dollars per month if you buy it yourself.

case in point, my college roommate's father work for GM, and according to my roommate, they have NEVER payed more than 3 dollars to see doctor or buy any sort of prescribed medicine.

Before the bankruptcy GM was paying 3 peoples salaries for every person they had working due to benefits packages and retirees. That 3-4k quickly added up to 12-16k monthly per person.

Part of the argument for better wages is that a UAW family of 4 isn't middle class.

That is true if the UAW member is the only source of income. But a majority of non UAW families have both spouses working and the kids go to daycare. Two incomes equals middle class wages.

No, it implies if you are going to compare yourself to the non union workforce then it needs to mirror them as well.

In all honestly the UAW just wants the best for their members.

But the reality is the non union world has had to battle rising insurance premiums while accepting decreased coverage. Minimal if any raises and actually decreases in many cases. Loss of many or all bonuses.

"ON THE SURFACE' the UAW expects to keep world class insurance, pickup signing bonuses, pick up profit bonuses, and gain a 11% raise for members.

Yes they need to be thankful to have a job.
