A Future CLASSIC Or Soon To Be Forgotten - Where Do You Place The Mazda RX-8?

If you haven't heard, recently the Mazda RX-8 was taken off life support simply to be let go. And that's sad, because Mazda had something special there.

Don't ask me, ask the thousands of happy owners and folks that had the chance to pilot the rotary-hearted beast. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them.

But anyone I've spoken to who fully appreciates driving -- and isn't a "badge whore" -- will tell you that it was a special piece that was tuned for drivers. Of course it also boasted those doors for the second row to provide some practicality.

There have only been two complaints from folks I have spoken to:

1) Gas mileage, gas mileage, gas mileage (which really wasn't that big of a deal when the car debuted way back when)

2) Early built models tended to be oil eaters

With that said, I think we may have something that could be worthy of some value down the road. Hell, even RX-7s are still highly desirable.

Question is: will the RX-8 have the same following and buyers chasing after it so values will remain propped up OR will it just simply become "another Mazda?"

The world was just not big enough.

That could be the epitaph on the bumper of the 2011 Mazda RX-8. It's the sports car few understood and even fewer loved enough in the end.

Now, the RX-8 will become a footnote, kind of like the RX-7, until, of course, hopefully, the RX-9. The very last RX-8 has been made. No more will follow. (Though there are still some at dealerships, hint, hint.)

Simply put, the RX-8 ran out of gas, and this summer Mazda Motor Corp. ended production of this top-of-the-line racer with a rotary engine and race car lines...

This car handles like a dream. I wish they would keep it and replace the rotory with a turbo 4 cyl. Maybe even stuff a 6cyl in there. Hands were tied for performance with the rotory. It needed to be able to beat the 350Z and the G35 now 370Z and G37. I wish they would do something with it. Oh well.

They simply need/needed a turbo on the car.

Another issue with the rotary is its lack of torque, requiring fuel-sapping high revs to do anything at all. The up-coming rotary that Mazda is planning for the RX9 should address this issue. The oil consumption is something that is well-known and many owners pre-mix their fuel with 2 stroke oil to compensate for this.

@ Badgewhore. I agree with everything you said but why bring politics into it. Herman Cain for 2012. I'm from Florida what can I say.

I owned a 2004 for a couple of yrs. Lets say it had just a few teething problems. I had to go back to the dealer for 3 ECU reflashes, replace a defective suspension component, replace a defective heater control, reseal and then finally replace the rear tail lamps. It got crappy gas mileage and drank oil like a sive.On a positive note the rear doors were unique and interesting. This car had great handling. If this car came out in the 90's it's performance would have been more acceptable. I traded it in for a Mini Cooper S in 2006. I've had virtually no trouble with my Mini and no regrets of trading the Mazda in.

I don't believe you. It's a JAPANESE car and NOTHING ever goes wrong on them! NEVER. EVER!

:) I think it's hilarious that Japanese fans call non fans trolls and vice versa.

I wonder how many people who trash the RX-8 actually had one. I owned an 04 for 6 years, averaged 19mpg (best was 23) which is perfectly acceptable in a sports car, and added a quart of oil about every thousand miles. The rotary is DESIGNED to burn oil, and a quart every 1k is hardly a pain in the ass.

This car will likely fall into history alongside early iterations of the RX-7: beloved by those who took the time to get to know it, forgotten by others who are ignorant and look at nothing but numbers.

A GT-R gets 17 according to fueleconomy.gov...it also costs upwards of 80 grand.
also, a 350Z got rated 20mpg, an 04 Evo got 19, and a miata got 20, so yeah, they're about all the same. And none of them have 500hp, since we're just randomly assigning numbers.

Your unreliable claim holds no water as I had no problems at all. It doesn't need more power, it drives just fine the way it is. If you want to drag race, get an American muscle car.

and I'd like to see a V6 Camry take an S-shaped on ramp at 65mph
