Hyundai CEO Says Loopholes In CAFE Standards Makes More Efficient Cars Unlikely
Upcoming U.S. corporate average fuel-economy guidelines have loopholes that could mitigate the mandates intended effects, Hyundai Motor America chief John Krafcik says.

Despite the mandated CAFE rule of 54.5 mpg (4.3 L/100 km) set for 2025, there may not be an increase in small fuel-efficient cars over the next 14 years, as expected.

“It used to be we wanted to downsize to meet fuel-economy targets, but now you really don’t have to do that,” Krafcik tells WardsAuto at a media event here.

I'm not blaming Obama, in fact I'm hugely in favor of him abandoning the CAFE standards.

I don't support Obama. But I'll take him over Perry, Romney or that head case Bachmann.

Obama is weak, doesn’t have any balls, doesn’t know how to negotiate, puts the worse people around him, continued the Bush wars and Tax cuts, kept Git-Mo open, scared of republicans, etc... But he has got some stuff done; Credit card reform, Got rid of DADT, Killed Bin Laden, Health care reform (something that no other president was able to do).

What about you? Out of the people I just named who would you support?

Delusional? Specifically how so?

Herman Cain? The guy who thinks that the way to create jobs in America is to give bigger breaks to millionaires and corporations. And Chris Christie is a joke. I live on the NY/NJ border and I work in NJ. People (who aren't millionaires) in NJ hate Christie. And besides, America will never elect a fat guy for president. He would further reinforce the world-wide image that Americans’ are fat, and would replace the White House vegetable garden with a BBQ grill and deep fryer.

"Sounds like Lexsucks is a diehard, blind, drank all the kool-aid, Democrat." - 1911

- Why? Cause I have an open mind? I'll vote for whomever I feel is the best candidate. If Ron Paul won the Republican nomination I'd vote for him. But the other GOP candidates are a joke. Let me ask you a question 1911? Who do you support? I know that it will be a republican. And you call me die-hard? LOL!! hypocritcal much?

Also, there's nothing wrong with being a Democrat.

- And a stomach the size of a beach ball. LOL!! Christie only has balls when he's gutting entitlements, and laying off state workers. When it comes to the wealthy? He’s does whatever they tell him to do. He would never get ballsy with the wealthy or corporations. It's only the poor and middle class that he shows balls against. Which seems to be right up your alley. Good Luck

- What has been repealed so far? You said "has been repealed".

"They are either unconstitutional or to far our." — Fijian

- Give an example. What has he passed that was unconsititional? Health care mandate? The same thing that Mitt Romney passed in his state? Besides that there isn't anything that he's done that can be considered unconsitutional. Name something that he passed that is too far out. Please.

"LEXSUCKS, that's because the States have the right to pass laws like that. The USA government can not pass a law like the REQUIRED to buy from the government plan.

It is clearly unconstitutional." — 1911

- So how did GOP member Romney get away with it? Isn't what GOP Member Romney passed unconstitutional as well?

"I can also name another unconstitutional act by Obama. Obama sent troops to go to war in Lybia without congressional approval." — 1911

- You mean the same exact thing that Bush did with Iraq? But that was OK back then? right?

It's a cut and dry case, yet no one in Washington has any balls left." — 1911

- Washington never had any balls to begin with. Did Washington have any balls when bush got us into the Iraq war without congressional approval?

LOL! 1911 every argument I've ever read of yours has been a giant diversion. When facts are raised that counter your points you attempt to attack the person you're arguing against by interpreting their argument in a way that can be argued against.

Trying to point out any sort of diversion makes you the biggest hypocrite on this forum :)

Only the red necks (and undercover red necks) feel threatened. It wasn't the red-necks that got him elected. You’re attempting to put all white people under the same umbrella (crazy generalization). Fail!

1) The reason why this country has the highest unemployment rate in history is Obamacare.Companies are reluctant to hire since if you go over 49 employees you have to have Obamacare. So they rather send the jobs overseas.

2) Higher cafe standards will only benefit foreign brands because they do not make the HD pickups and Vans that the domestics make. These are needed for construction jobs etc.

3) Obamas cash for clunkers crushed good cars while the real clunkers (pre 1984) cars were not allowed in the program.Guess what the clunkers are still polluting and the second hand car prices went about 10% higher.

Very nice Mr Obama.

Fijian,

Because of CAFE loopholes, those companies who *want* to take advantage of them, will. Historically, those have been US auto makers. Those companies who genuinely believe that higher fuel economy is a Good Thing, either for the planet or their bottom line (more likely), will produce such vehicles, regardless of regulations. Then consumers will decide what they want.

In review, today we have foreign cars that tend to be smaller and have better fuel economy than US cars. And US car makers, after having received billions in bail-out loot, are once again on the slippery slope to oblivion. They haven't understood what consumers want for the past 3 or 4 decades. What make you think they'll "get it" in the future with more stringent CAFE standards?

CAFE standards have loopholes because corporate industry lobbyist were instrumental in writing the requirements with loopholes in mind.

Where do you think the phrase in reference to the U.S. Government, "Corporately owned and controlled" comes from?
