Fiat Developing 300HP 1.8 Liter Turbocharged Engine For Alfa Romeo

Fiat Developing 300HP 1.8 Liter Turbocharged Engine For Alfa Romeo
Fiat S.p.A. has given the green light to a high performance 1.8 liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine for the Alfa Romeo brand that it has been considering for the past five years.

First announced in November 2006, the new unit – designed for both transversal and longitudinal applications – will be an all-aluminum unit featuring high pressure direct injection and turbocharging, with power peaking at 300hp, Fiat said.

Proof that you do not need a 5 liter motor to make 300hp.

Put the 260HP version in their Fiat 500.

It took BMW 6 cylinders, 3.0 litres, and 2 turbochargers to accomplish 300hp. And there were dimwits out there that thought that was an accomplishment. Read it and weep. Good going, FIAT. Not that I would buy one though...built on the wrong side of the Atlantic...I don't do European.

Yeah, because we all know that BMW couldn't do over 300-horsepower without using turbos. Nice analogy.

Ever heard of BMW Motorsport GmbH? Probably not, because you think they "need" turbos to do over 300-hp from a 3.0 engine. Turbos add more torque and increase engine efficiency. That's the reason why BMW went with them in the first place. An increase in horsepower is also a bonus point.

It didn't take all of that to get that kind of power when they were getting more out of the E36 M3. 320+ without any turbo so you can't say they need that. The twin turbo is part of their design to spool up faster and to make it feel less like a turbo.

BMW is getting 240 HP out of it's 2.0 4 cylinder now.I have no doubt that 300 HP would be possible. It really gets down to the fuel economy regs.GM is getting 260 HP out of its engine. Ford's ecoboost is at 230 HP.Tuning a turbo to get that kind of extra hP is a lot easier then a NA engine. The question will be drivability, fuel economy, turbo lag and how the engine will sound.Porsche claims to be able to get 350 from it's 2.5 flat 4 to go into the Boxster Cayman. It is also clear that 4 cylinder engines are going to be the wave of the future for mainstream auto makers.By developing this engine Fiat is commiting R and D to building up it's Alfa Romeo model range. This is a positive thing.

In addition, they have proved how capable they are with their new twin air engine, that was awarded the engine of the year (2011)

No the flagship Alfa will be based on the the 300 and get the Pentastar V6. Alfa may use the 1.8 also as an optional engine. Primarily for the B,C,and D segment FWD/AWD C-Evo platform the 1.8 will be the standard engine in various states of tune. Figure the 4C midengined sportscar will get the full 300 HP treatment and possible the Giulia. Other models will get the 1.8 in a lower state of tune. Figure also to see it in some Chrysler and Dodge models. But here is the thing. There is current speculation that this engine being aluminum might be based on the current engine block used in 2.0 and 2.4 sizes that make up the 4 cylinder in existing Chrysler and Dodge/Mitsubishi models now. It's simply being totaly re-engineered.As for RWD Alfa's it should be the flagship based on the Chrysler 300, the midengined 4C and a cheaper spider. Small possibility of a coupe but that will depend on sales.
