Every year we're always confronted with a blast of new products, new technologies, new designs, and now -- more than ever -- new niches. Cars and trucks are exploring new terrain, literally and figuratively.

And as you would expect, some are complete flops. They just can't get the job done no matter how you slice it. THEN there are the products you know are going to blow everyone away. No secrets there.

But every once and a while there's something that no one saw coming. It's the car or truck that is "the dark horse."

They are getting closer, last month they were 75% lower then leaf sales. If they can pull even, it will be a surprise, which is what this article was asking for.

The Evoque, not so much a surprise. People will buy a Land Rover badged Escape in droves.

I know this asks what 2012 model but I wanted to throw out there a 2013 model and that's the 2013 Cadillac ATS. I predict this vehicle to be a surprise success story!
