Toyota To Challenge Top Class Diesels At LeMans With Hybrid Entry

Toyota has announced a return to the world's most famous endurance race. Next year, the Japanese carmaker will enter the top LMP1 class at Le Mans with a completely new sports car.

The new team will be based at Toyota Motorsport's headquarters in Cologne, with the new prototype expected to start its pre-season testing early 2012. And while scant information has been provided, all we know is...it's a hybrid petrol powertrain.

The Toyota GT-One from the late 90's was one of the best looking prototypes of recent times IMO...it still looks futuristic 12 years later. The Mercedes CLR was also right up there in terms of looks.

This is a good development for Toyota. LeMans is the ultimate proving ground for technologies destine for production. Just the exposure to the competition alone will benefit Toyota immeasurably.
