Who's' The MOST Improved Player Since Redesign? New Porsche 911 Or New BMW 3-Series?
Two of the biggest all-new products going into the 2012 model year are the BMW 3-Series and Porsche 911. Both are German icons that are really at the top of their respective classes.
The 3-Series sets the benchmark for the entry-level premium segment. Armed with a complete design overall inside and out, it is likely only going to put MORE fire to the competition's feet.
The 911, on the other hand, is essentially one of those cars every gearhead has to own at one point in their life. That's because 911s are so unique! Simply put, there is nothing like a 911 on the road from the sound, driver's position and interior quality.
Given that both of these buff autos are icons in their respective arenas, we're a bit curious as to who has IMPROVED the MOST over time. In addition, what do you like MOST about the changes over the years AND do you think both cars are continuing on the right path for success?

As a 335i owner, the update is a disappointment.
Same engine? Come on!
I'm leaning toward a 650i or 911. Both are far more substantial updates. The new 3-series seems more like a mid-cycle refresh.

Actually, if you know anything about BMWs of the past decade or so, the new models always carry over the old engine for at least a year or two before a new engine is introduced... E46 family had the 323/328, refreshed to 325/330. Then when the E90 family came, it held onto the 325/330 engines before switching to 328/335. I'm certain this F30 family will carry over the 328/335 moniker before switching over engines during the midlife cycle...
And its not unique to the 3er, nor is it really unique to any brand to do this...

Actually, traditionally the new engine would appear in the car a year to two years before the new model came out. The engines e36 323i and 328i replaces the M44 1.8l and the 2.5l and came out before the e46, which came as a 323i and 328i. The e34 530i and 540i came out in the e34 before the e39 debuted. the smaller 3.0 v8 was dropped. The 1.8l m42 came out in the e30 318i in 88 before the e36. The M52 2.5i Vanos and the 4.0 v8 in the e32 came out in the in the 94 and 95 e34 525i and 540i and the e39 came out in 96 debuting with those two engine. Up until lately, the engines for the new replacement models would debut in the current model 1-2 years before the new model came out. The 3.4l big 6 in the e23 735i came out replacing the 3.2 in the 733i before the next gen e32 7 series 735i came out. The e32 740 came out just before the new e38 740 series.

Henry, the 323/328 engines first debuted in the e36 just over a year before the e46 came out. They have actually traditionally debuted the engines for the new model in the old model 1-2 years before the new model comes out.

Definitely the 911. From some angles the front end of the new 3 looks weird, the hump in the hood just kinda droops. I like the interior in light colors though.

Given that neither is currently available to test drive, the most prudent thing to do is wait until they are.
Looks wise though, neither really breaks any new ground from their predecessors, so it's pretty much a wash in that area.

Wow!!! Did you come up with that one all by yourself? Look man, I'm not trying to diss you. After all, you're a nice enough kid to honor your mom by adopting her name, even though you altered it by adding the word "badge".

Your insults are weak. Politics, Seriously? 996 clients, really? Do you even speak english? The only part of your reply that made any sense is you implying that I would actually own an A4, and that was stepping over the line.

New 911 is more powerful, is some 10+ seconds quicker around Nurburgring than the older model, got a 7 speed manual, more fuel efficient...etc. Also IMO it looks better than it's predecessor especially rear end styling and interior.
3 series is only a very minor update over the outgoing model and in some cases a step back like front end styling and the 328i now got 4 cylinder instead of a 6 cylinder.

Badgewhore2: Be carefull , the statistics say that the most popular brand with gays and girls is BMW. I am straigh but I do not care about who buys BMW ....I like the brand an that does not mean that I am gay. Finaly after check all the pictures, this redesign is a fail for me. The hood looks horrible.....it seems like the create it arround the engine and it is so big that hood looks bulki. Interior does not looks bad but this is the worst design in the town and yes it looks a lot like Mitsubishi Lancer in the front.

@ badgewhore2, quit kidding yourself. The only woman that wants to be seen in your metallic blue 328 sedan is your dad.
On a side note, Both the 911 and early versions of the 3 series are iconic cars in their own right. Porsche will always be evolutionary with respect to the 911. The fact that the current 911 still shares common design cues from ones from 1960's may prevent it from appealing to the masses, but so what? The 911 doesn't have to be built for everyone, it shouldn't be, unlike the 3 series, which has to be marketed to everyone in order to increase sales volumes and market share. BMW should have maintained an evolutionary approach to design in doing so. The problem with what BMW is doing with its designs and sizing is that it aims to attract new buyers at the expense of fans that have been buying their cars for the last 30 years. In my opinion, the new 3 series would like much better without the goofy bulges on the hood and changes to the grill. Change for the sake of change isn't always great. Look how many evolutionary face lifts your mama's had over the last 20 years, and the only thing that she managed to evolve into is The Predator.

Ill agree that their isnt a car like the 911 on the road but interior quality in reference to a 911??? Are you joking, maybe the new one is nicer but from the 993 to 997 their interiors have been incredibly cheap tons of plastics all over the place and not soft ones and all one color until recently I know thats the fan boy talking but lets be serious for a second Porsches have never been known for their interior quality their build quality yes but until recently with the Panamera and new Cayenne Porsche interiors have been low rent when it comes to materials unless your paying extra for power seats and leather interior.....which for the prices should already be there....

There's something wrong with the curves on the BMW hood. I think it reminds me of the old Z3, the buldge is too far forward or something.

Badgewhore2: Based in your comments of the overhangs of the Porsche, looks like you already think that the Grand Coupe is an epic fail and it looks like Caprice SS. I like the proportions of the new Porsche, and definitely is not a fair comparation with a car that looks cheap in front like a Mitsu.

The new 3 series looks like the new 5 series which strongly resembles the new 3 series. (Yawn!)
The new 911 is outstanding outside and inside. Maybe I will purchase the next year model after all bugs have been addressed.
