Daimler will work with Renault, but not Nissan (Infiniti)? I think both M-B & Infiniti could really learn/benefit from each other. Benz needs a bit more "soul" in its lineup as Infiniti needs the "right" kind of nudge to finally build a flagship sedan. The M56x is nice, but too sporty to be the luxury flagship for the brand.

What are you talking about? The alliance between Daimler and Nissan-Renault automatically means that Infiniti will be involved in future deals as well. In fact both Daimler and Infiniti are supposed to produce some smaller cars with Renault FWD platforms and small 4-cylinder Mercedes' engines. There's also talk of Infiniti receiving a modified version of Daimlers new 3.5 V6.

BSBB is 100% correct. They fucked up the Chrysler "merger". Their best bet would be to strike a deal with Honda or Mitsubishi.

For MB to say this means too things:

1. They miss the cost savings and platform "sharing" they had with Chrysler

2. MB is not optimistic about the global economy turning around anytime soon and are looking to spread/share/off-load production and development costs with/onto another manufacturer.

Hyundai would make an excellent choice. They share similar styling and Hyundai/Kia could use the reputation boost an alliance with MB would bring.
