Trick And Treatless? 009's Lexus Update

Trick And Treatless? 009's Lexus Update
It is no secret that I am not a fan of certain brands, but sometimes for the greater good you just need to suck it up and take one for the team.  So when my wife brought home a preowned 2008 Lexus LX450h back in April I decided to keep my criticisms quiet and let her (the average driver) tell me what she thought.

As you may remember she had replaced a preowned 2006 ML350 she had drove for two years prior.  The ML350 was a satisfying vehicle, and over the course of ownership had one minor issue under warranty and two minor repairs outside of warranty that totaled to about $500 over two years.   Overall her gas mileage was around 19 MPG in normal driving.

The 2008 RX450h that replaced it, is equally as nice and gets you around from point A to point B in a stylish and yet reasonable fashion.  However the mileage overall has only been 22 MPG for her at best.  Yes, it is better than the Mercedes, but far below what she expected especially for a hybrid.  While I have to say she is a bit of a lead foot, the crux of the matter is probably that we live on edge of several arteries in the city and most of the street speeds are 45mph or higher.  This vehicle rarely sits in traffic, nor pokes at 30MPH or lower speeds.  Simply put, this driver, environment, and vehicle are not in sync, so the Hybrid option is a non factor. In the effort to be fair, AND satisfy my own curiosity  I drove the vehicle for a week see how it fared with me.  I averaged about 27 MPG on the tank, but it really took some effort.  I would have expected a bump in the ML350 mileage by a few MPG if was driven the same frugal way as well.

So, yes the fan boys are right the RX450h DOES indeed give me better mileage in real world use, but the environment is a huge factor to deal with.

So Round One goes to the Lexus for better mileage

The biggest surprise however for us, has been the repetitive issues we have had with this vehicle in the short time of ownership. Rarely a month goes by that a TPS light does not go off.  Three visits to the dealership have been fruitless because while this system does indeed indicate a problem, it does not pinpoint it to a tire.  So far three visits and three sensors later we and we still have an issue. Lexus won’t warranty approve more than one sensor at a time so pity on those who suffer a similar fate.

Also for some odd reason both headlamps decided at different times to break seals and require replacement.  Not a real hazard to speak of but a pain and two more dealership visits.

So were are up to five visits in the course six months for minor issues in a very un-Lexus like fashion. So many visits in fact that the valet at the dealership knows my wife by name. (Yikes!)

But, the story doesn’t end here. I just arrived back from being out of town this morning to see the RX sitting on a flat bed trailer in the driveway. Yep, another visit, and a big one  this time is seems. The RX started then died, then started again, but it struggled to idle and then EVERYTHING went black. I suspected the puny standalone battery had given up the ghost and was in the last stages of use.  The car was dead in it tracks and even a jump couldn’t save it.

I have to admit that contrary to the studies and the ratings when it comes to Lexus and the 009 household it just doesn’t work out.  Lesson learned for now (yet again).

Round Two goes to the Mercedes for better reliability over a far longer time frame.

So here I sit and the most reliable car in the house with no issues EVER has been the VW CC. There is irony deep in there somewhere!

Care to guess who will win round three?

BTW: Just called the dealership and they are calling in a specialist to look at the issue the RX won't respond. Go figure!

Actually this is the third Lexus since 2000 and all have had issues.

I honestly feel that the owners of Lexus are less demanding therefore report far less issues to JD Power. The more you love the idea you got a great value the more forgiving you are.

I trust both, but when you are backed up by tons of data, it's hard to ignore.

"- Spoken like a true Lemming."

I'm not a fan of Lexus, but honestly, I can't seem to recall hearing any Lexus owners complain like I've heard many of my friends with VWs.

UPDATE: The issue was the starter battery. The extreme heat did in quite a number of them down here. The dealership says they have been replacing them right and left, but most are under warranty. It would have been under $200 if if was out of warranty. They are also replacing the 4th TPS unit today. The only other one is in the spare.

This real world data shows what Consumer Reports doesn't show - namely that all modern cars are very reliable and if there's a problem it is usually a minor issue that might be annoying, but hardly strands the car in the middle of nowhere.

I trust such reviews from owners more than the BS at Consumer Reports, which to me has always been biased.

Not that I don't trust you 009 ! lol ! But your dramatic hate and disgust of all things Toyota makes this a tiny bit suspicious and to be honnest, I'm presently shopping for an RX as well and the following could help me in my choice.

Would you care (so the the Lexus fan boys can shut up and for my peace of mind) to post pics of the dealer receipts (name blotched out of course) for the warranty repairs.

I'm presently looking at an RX, a used Highlander Hybrid or a TDI Touareg on a 3 year lease

we bought a certified 08 rx350 about 6 months ago and have been very happy. drives great, reliable, good mileage (we're averaging 20 mpg w/ mixed driving). I consider myself an enthusiast driver so I was surprised that i'd like a Lexus so much. I am now considering the new GS when it comes out in 2012. FYI, we've both generation MDX's in the past, XC90 and this drives better than all of them.

Not saying you won't get a good one. When you buy pre-owned you take your chances but this one was serviced at the same Lexus dealer and seems to have been a decent ride.

LOL I'll gladly show you the service reports for this one.

I have to say that the closest Lexus dealer always seems to be skeptical of any issues brought to them. The tire sensors were blown off twice at service intervals and only addressed when the service manager became involved. The first headlight was greeted with disbelief and they actually ran the VIN for wreck history and then scrutinized the front end of the car for prior damage.

That one kinda irked me a bit, but it really seems that either the dealer is really strict or Lexus is on warranty work.

Right now they can't get a grip on this just yet.

Gotta remember. Both car were bought pre-owned and service at the dealer with. The Mercedes dealer found the transmission ECU issue while servicing the car and billed it to warranty under a TSB. The other issue was a broken gas door (which I did), and a belt tensioner that started to squeak. We owned the ML350 for about 2 years. Those two were outside of warranty.

The Lexus dealer found nothing wrong and blew off the TPS issue. And actually if they were to have addressed it correctly the first time it would have only been one visit. But that is their call. Who knows what happened to the headlights. For now the jury is still out on the total shut down.

009,

Everyone knows that Lexus are 100% reliable, and that there has never been a Lexus ever created that gave its owner(s) a single problem. Stop making stuff up.

Hoorayforpeepee,
If you can afford it, go with the 2012 Touareg TDI. I am not biased to any certain vehicle, we own a Lexus LS 460, Touareg V8 and a MINI. I have owned everything from a Honda Accord, MB C-Class and a BMW 3 Series. We tested the RX when we were shopping for an SUV for my wife and we were not impressed with the RX at all. The RX is an outstanding vehicle but its not sporty at all. My wife and I drive our cars like sports cars, so we needed something similar to a Cayenne but without the price tag. The Acura MDX was a front runner but it has too much plastic in the inside. The new VW is expensive though, the fit and finish are excellent and you will not disappear in the crowd like everyone else than owns an RX. Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for the feedback, when it comes to german products, I am always more comfortable within the limitations of a warranty which is why I look at leases, used Cayennes go for pretty cheap, I have no clue on how extended warranties work with Porsche, would have to check that out

009 - I just wish you put your disclosure (biased against Lexus) on each article you post about i) Toyota/Lexus demise or ii) Hyundai/Kia rise against Toyota/Lexus, like you did here. Your assessment will carry so much more credibility. And on this particular posting, I appreciate that 009. Quality issue aside, I can relate to 009's comment about dealer's tendency to question that a problem actually exist. I absolutely can't stand when they react in that fashion.

The dealer reaction is QUITE annoying. If the headlamp seal is broken do the accident report off to the side and inspect it FIRST. Then IF you find something on it point it out. Don't deny it in front of the customer.
