Toyota Posts Best Sales Month Since April

Toyota sold 136,046 vehicles in the U.S. in October, down 4.3% when adjusted for 26 selling days vs. year-ago’s 27.

“You can see I’m having a little bit of crow for lunch,” Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager-Toyota Div., tells the media in a conference call. He earlier predicted Toyota would be above year-ago in October, both adjusted and unadjusted.

“On a retail basis, we were very close to year-ago,” he says. “When we spoke last month, I knew it was going to be a heroic effort to pass October. Nevertheless, that was our plan.”

Another factor with low inventory levels is that dealers use it to their advantage by being less willing to bargain on prices with customers. People may be turned off and look elsewhere like Honda and Hyundai. This factor is affecting Toyota's market volume and share.
