Toyota President Says Changes To Culture Have To Be Made To Keep Up With Hyundai
As Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda passed the banged-up Aston Martin Zagato in his Lexus LFA on the Nuerburgring race track last month, he figured that was it for the British race car.

Toyoda and Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez, both recognized for their contribution to motorsports by the German auto industry this year, were meant to switch cars later and cross the finish line side by side -- Bez in the Lexus, the Toyota (7203.T) chief in the Zagato.

"I thought, 'that doesn't look good," Toyoda, an amateur racer, recalled after the four-hour endurance race at the track, in Germany's Eifel region. "I think everybody did."

The mishap seemed like a metaphor for the road his company has travelled since Toyoda took over more than two years ago.

shamelessly steal??? I believe that is what Lexus did when it started and Toyota did it in the 80's and 90's.

Wow! People are still hanging on to the 1990 Lexus LS400. LOL!!! I guess they have to go that far back to find a lexus that actually was worth the money. Just like you have to go back to the mid 90's to find a Toyota that actauly performed.

And do you have any facts to prove the drivel? " To this very day, that motor is still smoother than any production automobile engine merc has ever built in their entire history of over 100+yrs."

"And how did Toyota get those inline 6 to be even smoother and more reliable than BMWs famous inline6?" - Badgewhore2

Stop making up stuff. Toyota fans are beyond retarded.

They are in a pickle Once they stopped manipulating the Yen the house of cards started coming down. All of the sudden the "lean and mean" automakers couldn't compete on a price basis. It appears they were no leaner and meaner than the rest of the market. When placed on an even playing field they began to falter.

Add that to the natural disasters that has occurred and they have a big hole to crawl out of. Can you see a bailout coming? I can.

Let me guess, you'd still support an increasingly government funded Toyota? It's not like they've never accepted grants in the past... *cough cough prius development cough cough*

"and it was a superior product to anything from Mercedes" — 1911

BS. The Lexus was a better value not a better car. Stop rewriting history.

There is no change in culture, lol, it's just that the Hyundai is better that Toyota on many levels, even in looks. Toyota has to fire it's design team and get some Germans in there.

Hyundai did the culture change a while back and you can tell in the lineup, the marketing and the quality.

They were forced to about a decade ago. Toyota now finds itself at a crossroads.

The marketing to us car enthusiasts means nothing, marketing only misinforms the uninformed non auto people.

Nice to see Toyota show humility in the face of adverse business climate, challenges and poor strategic planning.

Let there be no doubt that Hyundai is the Asian brand to beat.

So its come to this point. Move most of your production away from Japan or ask for corporate welfare from Japan.

With both Honda and Toyota in decline, it is so amusing to read the loud the cries of denials from the 'yota and Honda fan boys.

Hyundai is now the Asian brand to beat!

I must agree on Hyundai being on top, but Honda is still better than Toyota, just don't say anything bad against Toyota, you will surely be de boosted, lol, I have owned many Toyotas and presently I own a civic now, The Civic has way less problems than any of my Toyota's did.

Huu76back, You are Japanese aren't you? I do love the Japanese people and Koreans... what you say was relevant 5 years ago, but today not only are they better, but also cheaper and more reliable, have you noticed how much better they look? Am I the only non fan of any company here? I give credit where credit is due, and I have owned a few Toyotas too, I will also tell anyone the weak points of all my vehicles, surprisingly most Toyota fans cant do this? WHY? ??? I love and hate all brands, including Toyota.

The Toyota president said it all himself, he also believes that they have to catch up with Hyundai, what more do you blind Toyota fans want to hear, Toyota is best? now do I get points here?,lol, with all of you blind fanboys here I thing the more negatives boosts the better here, Toyota fans need more progressive thinkers, black is white...This ignorance for any brand slows competition, if people would buy only the best quality, engineering, safety... all of the companies would be pushing the boundaries way more, can you imagine what you favourite vehicle would be like if people were more informed and had no brand loyalty, so to all blind fans please drop your biases and go by the facts, just like this Toyota big shot is stating, lol
