VW May Force Porsche To Use R8 Platform For Ferrari Killer

Porsche may be forced to use the underpinnings of the next-generation Audi R8 for its all-new Ferrari 458 supercar rival — in spite of it being Volkswagen Group’s designated maker of platforms for future sports cars.

Development of this all-new part-carbonfibre architecture is already at an advanced stage and it was previewed on the Audi R8 E-tron concept at the recent Frankfurt motor show. It will underpin the second-gen R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Hopefully, it's a new co developed chassis, the current chassis and drive train combo is overweight.

Did anyone think VW wasn't going to force its will on one of the last great independant sports car company! The ride down that long slippery
slope to becoming a marginalized member of a big behemoth has begun. Next sign will be when VW momma's CFO calls Porsche and says I need 15% more profit next quarter...sad to see.

I agree, rip Porsche. Thankfully it will only be the chassis(if the rumor is correct), at least Porsche will be able to work their magic with the suspension and engine side. Considering Porsche has 1000 times more experience developing sportscars than Audi, the Porsche version will always be superior.

The R8 is basically the Gallardo. So the replacement for the Gallardo will come to market first, and then R8 replacement. And the VW CEO had a competition to develop chassis for upcoming cars in the VW Group. He did that to spur intense competition between Porsche and Audi knowing that Audi was never going to get the design/engineering work.

It also brought out fresh ideas from Audi AG that would have never surfaced without the competition. Porsche will develop upcoming chassis for upcoming VW Group cars and more importantly their own cars. And that is how it should be. Porsche influence is taking over the VW Group from the inside out. And the first generation Cayenne had an interesting history. VW AG knew they were going to build as SUV. So they gave Porsche $450,000,000 to develop the chassis the underpins the Touerag, Cayenne and the late to market Q7 and the Porsche Panamera. Each SUV has it's own engine offerings, sheetmetal, suspension and etc.

Which "recent" platform has Porsche borrowed from VW except the PL (Cayenne)one?
Also, with all the respect they deserve, can somebody mention a "supercar" made by a Japanese car manufacturer?

No he said, "supercar" not, "grand tourer"

So, isn't the Carrera GT a supercar?

The "slow" R8? Might as well borrow "proven" GT-R platform. I'd love to see Porsche engine combined w/ GT-R AWD platform. :)

it is an Audi platform not a Porsche. I guess a 3.5 0-60 11.5 1/4 is slow. I will take slow in a 5 year old car.
