The New Performance Brand? Hyundai Giving Genesis Coupe A Major Horsepower Boost For 2013

Hyundai revealed its updated Genesis coupe on Facebook last week, but the cosmetics are just sizzle. The new fascia looks, uh, new, but the red meat is under the sheetmetal. At a relatively small event in Korea today, the company confirmed big updates to both the four- and six-cylinder powertrains.

The base 2.0-liter turbocharged four, an uncharismatic, gruff engine that previously offered just 210 hp and 223 lb-ft, is now good for 271 hp and 275 lb-ft. The change comes by way of a larger intercooler and a new twin-scroll turbocharger.

More exciting, the optional 3.8-liter V-6 gets a shot of steroids. This engine uses direct injection—its now functionally the same engine as in the 2012 Genesis sedan—and boasts 345 hp and 295 lb-ft.

I doubt the chassis can match the new engine..... but it's a good try. Maybe in 5 years it'll be a Z competitor.

NISSAN, get us some new engines, no MB's!

The Z is no longer a contender. Under powered and obsolete.

They sat too long on a dated design.

009, what an ignorant comment.

I don't know, based on previous Hyundai horsepower ratings they usually appear optimistic. The heavier V6 Mustang is quicker than the Genesis V6 with the same horsepower output. We'll see how much the Genesis improves. Not saying that's its slow but it currently trails similarly powered competition.

That is an ignorant statement 009. The 370 Z is better and faster than any other Z. 0-60 in under 5 seconds, how is that underpowered? It was faster than the Mustang GT before the 5.0 came out and it did this with a 6 cylinder.

The current Z is done (as the sales numbers suggest). 009 was right. You guys are having a tough time accepting reality. The rough VQ engine that's in the Z is long overdue for a replacement.

You have to go back to the last century to find a toyota that performed. LOL!!! What about this century?

Only old guys wax fondly about the Supra, primarily because they were the only ones that could afford one.

"Irrelevant when, Toyota simply followed the sales trend that showed performance coupes are/were a marginal market. Christ, even Pontiac had shelved the Trans-Am for this reason. If you honestly think Toyota somehow forgot how to make great handling sports cars, then explain the IS-F and LF-A, letalone the Celica AllTrac Turbo from years ago....the market has simply become niche....even the Nissan Z tapered off drastically. " — pondosinatra

- Then what makes the current Toyotas any different than the other appliances? You've just described a brand that only cares about selling the most amount of vehicles possible. To hell with people who actually like cars. Toyota has become a cookie-cutter appliance car maker. The current Toyotas aren't even worth mentioning. At least Hyundai offers some excitement, Toyota offers boredom.

" Toyota stopped trying"

- That's an understatement. All you have to due is look at the Current Toyotas and you can see that they've given up on making cars for people who like driving.
