LA Auto Show: Land Rover To Debut Defender DC100 Concept

An evolved, more rugged version of the Land Rover Defender DC100 concept will be shown off at the Los Angeles motor show tomorrow.

The revisions – which include optimised off-road 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Cooper all-terrain tyres and expedition accessories such as a raised air-intake 'snorkel' for wading and a roof rack – have been made to assert the go-anywhere looks and off-road credibility of the Land Rover Defender DC100 concept, which will appear alongside the open-topped DC100 Sport at Los Angeles.

Land Rover wants to return the new Defender to its roots and connect with the third world. Land Rover boss John Edwards told Autocar that the new 4x4 “must be capable, usable and abusable and appropriate for the third world market.”

Put live solid axles on it and a suspension similar to the Discovery II and build it so it can be modified and lifted and I will be in line.

I would have said the same thing if you didn't, I can't wait for a company to get it, a real off road worthy 4x4.

What is up with the princess tires? has anyone ever seen low profile tires this small on any race trucks or real off road vehicles? 20 inch rims would be fine with 38 inch tires, and the independent suspension belongs on a sports car, or if they are going to keep the IFS at least have some wheel travel! A min if 12inches of wheel travel would be a start, and I am a fan of selectable lockers, electronic traction control doesn't belong on an off road vehicle, sometimes you need wheel travel, I had a loaner car with traction control, I almost couldn't get out of my driveway when there was 6inches of snow, the traction control just put the brakes on to stop the wheel spin, it was pathetic! My civic with no traction control made it with ease with min, wheel spin, this Defender is a car! Pathetic, if people want to drive a car they can buy one, if they want an off road vehicle it sure isn't this one, LR should fire the person in charge of this blotched attempt, they could hire me! Some good old common sense .

I feel ya truckman, but the Traction control Land Rover has works very well. It doesn't cut engine power. I have taken my Discovery II over some terrain that you wouldn't believe with open front rear and center diffs and just the traction control. But I do agree with you. My wifes ML320 almost got stuck once in some of that slick mud. didn't make any ruts but it was like ice. when the wheels spun it killed engine power until I realized I had to turn off the stability control so it wouldn't cut engine power. After that it was fine. Go to youtube and type in discovery traction control. But yeah other than that traction control sucks. 'll take a LSD rear anyday. Thats one thing that pisses me off about BMW of today. from the later 90's on back many BMW's had LSD rear diffs and it made them a blast to drive. Now they you can't do what you used to be able to do with a good e30 3 series.

85bmw745i , If I couldn't have a selectable locking diff I would go with the mechanical true track, I am not a fan of the clutch type. As far as traction control goes, when you turn it off you are only going to get a true two wheel drive when you engage it in 4 wheel drive, and yes you can get very far without lockers, sadly I didn't want to spend the money on lockers so I relied on momentum, the difference between open diffs and lockers is still night and day, it separates the boys from the girls, although some girls can be tough, lol, I have gone wheeling with some similar trucks with lockers and they just walked up the loose rocky hill climb, I was hopelessly stuck with two open diffs. I'll check out the video, thanks.
