Obama Administration Planning To Go Ahead With 54.5 MPG Standard
The Obama administration on Wednesday is unveiling its proposed 2017-2025 fuel efficiency standards, saying it plans to nearly double requirements to 54.5 mpg by 2025.

Along with the boost in fuel standards for 2012-2016, the new rules will save over $1.7 trillion at the pump, or more than $8,000 per vehicle by 2025, the administration said in a draft press released obtained by The Detroit News.

The actions also will reduce America's dependence on oil by an estimated 12 billion barrels, and, by 2025, reduce oil consumption by 2.2 million barrels per day. The new rules will cut oil consumption by 4 billion barrels and cut 2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution over the lifetimes of the vehicles sold in those years.

My understanding of Americans (as a nation) is that they are capable of amazing things when they have their backs against the wall. IMNSHO, let the bar be set high, so those US auto makers who have the stuff to make it in the 21st Century, will, with flying colors.

And those who can't "make it," who can't compete against foreign manufacturers, who cry foul at unfair advantages (maybe thems Aushuns *is* smarter, huh?), should be allowed to wither on the vine, and make way for those who can get the job done.

This doesn't just affect the auto manufactures... it forces the consumers to start thinking more economically... starting with probably their least economical product... I think with the combination of hybrid, diesel, and forced injection engines available, that this bill although steep, doesn't represent something completely unreasonable. Once again, it needs to be a comprise between consumer and manufacturer, and recognize that performance is soon to be more of a luxury than a norm... and that the HP wars will soon be over...
