Toyota Lays Down Plans To Start Moving Production To US

Toyota may shift a significant amount of production to the U.S. should demand in Japan fail to rebound and the majority of its output is shipped overseas.

"If demand in Japan recovers, we will continue and work to maintain production of 3 million units" in Japan, President Akio Toyoda said Thursday. "If most of it becomes exports, shifting a significant amount of production to the U.S. may be considered."

UMMM...aren't the vast majority of Toyota models sold in North America made in North America? Maybe I'm wrong.

About half of the models Toyota offers in the states are have variants "made in the usa" Of the half, there is still a significant portion of those vehicles that are produced elsewhere. For example, a number of Corollas and Camries are also imported from Japan/Thailand.

This is all a far cry from "the vast majority"

You mean all thse Corollas and Camries (Camries, really?) that were built during earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear meltdowns and floods?

Your perceptions about Camrys and Corollas are way off. About 2/3rds of Corollas and almost all Camrys are US made. Toyota has said that now Camry hybrids will be built in the US and with Mississippi open, the VAST majority of Corollas will be built here too.

Currently 2/3rds of all Toyotas sold in the US are built in the US, if not vast, at least a significant majority.

And the US made ones suffered the leaset sales downturns during the aforementioned natural disasters.

Every month Toyota releases domestic/import breakdowns.

I'm sorry but I don't consider made in Canada or Made in Mexico to be on par with made in the USA.
