2012 BMW M550d To Have Over 500 HP And 500 FT/LB Of Torque!
The rumor coming out of a BMW dealer presentation held in the Netherlands last week is that the previously rumored M550d will officially come in with 381 HP from its tri-turbo inline-6 cylinder diesel motor, far lower than the initial speculations of 500+ HP. But it will make over 516 lb-ft torque! Finally, it will be AWD-only, as speculated earlier.

Please check your headline. As mentioned the 550d will have 381hp, and not over 500hp.

that's a truckload of both. This is still a 3.0L I6, right?

Yikes !!!

Thats a lot of Hp

I know Audi just launched a 3.0L TDI with 313hp in its A6 Estate with intentions to release it across the range.

They will have to hurry up and find another 60hp at least.

To put in perspective the Leap in Tech of the last Decade:

My Friends Brand New 2001 X5 4.4i made 289hp {4.4L V8} NA

Now you have 535d making 313hp {3.0L I6} FI

I would not like to bet what would happen in the next decade

If it were indeed 500hp at first, the torque would be way wayyyy more than 500lb/ft. You would be looking at more like 900-1000lb/ft. a 500hp diesel would kill the current M5 in acceleration with all of that torque.

I drove the 740d on the autobahn last summer. I still hate diesels.

What will car makers do when all cars have 1000 HP? Is there nothing else important except horsepower ratings? Whatever happened to bragging about the length of the tranny shifter stick?

Ten years from now... not 1000hp regularly... maybe 500ft-lb 200hp electric motors...
