it makes sense. for many automakers to survive, they have to start merging technologies and sharing ideas for a cleaner and more fuel efficient world.
People forget that BMW invented specific algorithms for Onstar and they didnt sell it to GM, they gave it to GM because it helps saves lives. BMW just asked GM to share future technology with them that could help save lives of their drivers. Its for the greater good of the consumer and not about egos.

"In return, Toyota plans to provide BMW with hybrid technology used for combining combustion engines and electric motors"

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/260263/

BMW make the best diesel engines and Toyota is the leader in hybrids so smart move. Earlier we have seen Mercedes-Nissan-Renault partnership.

By what standards are the BMW Diesels judged the best ?

I will admit the I6 Diesels are fantastic.

But in the 4cyl category BMW are clearly behind Audi and VW in terms of Refinement.

I know they are better on power {181hp compared to 170hp}

But across Europe and the UK the VW 2.0TDI is unarguably much more refined and efficient than the BMW 2.0d

The bmw 2.0D has won the international engine of the year in its class the past few years for its class leading efficiency, performance, and refinement.

Oh has it ?

Im glad that my driving one everyday, from 520d to 320d to 120d somehow distorts my ability to tell the difference between it and the VW offerings which friends and family members own.

Im sick and tired of having debates with people who never experience these vehicles

If any of you morons were on the phone to me while i drove the 120d or 320d on the Motorway at 70+ mph you will not be telling me about some FUCKING AWARD.

I should know because my girlfriend whom i speak to regularly while on the Motorway refuses to do so when im in the BMWs while when in the VW 2.0TDI its not a problem.

Why cant people refrain from commenting on vehicles they have never driven.

FYI

I currently have a 120d M-Sport in white parked Downstairs, if you want ill give you the registration no and you can confirm with Avis how long ive had said vehicle, you could also ask them to verify i had the 520d M-Sport for 2 months and the 320d M-Sport for 3 weeks.

Now please, responses from people who HAVE ACTUALLY DRIVEN THESE VEHICLES.

Not some armchair expert.

Agents.... Why do i not have the ability to de-boost ? { Does not work either on safari or firefox}

Interesting how you claim i am a fanboi, when i just told you i have been paying atrocious rates for over 4 months to rent BMWs when i could easily ask for VWs or other vehicles in the Rental Co's Fleet.

You seem to be one of those individuals who will blindly go because some expert has said it is safe to go.
I spoke from experience, if you had responded that you also have driven both vehicles extensively and felt i was wrong i probably would not mind. However you trotted out the Best "Insert Category" Award.

Might I add that all sorts of Vehicles and Manufacturers have at some point in time won awards for being best in class, including Surburbans and Escalades.

Yeah, but the BMW's 2.0 is currently winning IEOTYA best in class awards..3 years in a row.

"You seem to be one of those individuals who will blindly go because some expert has said it is safe to go."

Yeah, why listen to a chemistry professor, when you can just play with chemicals yourself and "find out".

Thing is you fail to take into consideration things like sound detaining, tire noise and exhaust noise, which all effect interior noise, and have nothing to do with the engine itself.
I’ll take the experts’ advice on who makes the best diesel engines. Thanks.

In which guise is it winning awards ?

The 318d/ 320d or 323d

Because those are all the same 2.0d engine in different stages of tune.

Also i have driven enough vehicle to know the difference between engine noise and Wind/Tyre noise.

If you notice i never claimed the BMW diesel was inferior in terms of Hp, Just Refinement as that was what i noticed.

Not to worry, im sure you also thought the M5 V10 engine was more refined than the 3.0L I6 engine because some experts gave the V10 engine of the year award.

Personally, I think this recent surge of US-market diesels will turn out to be a financial failure. For whatever reason, North Americans won't buy non-pickup truck diesels. But I still want to see the R8 V12 TDI make it to production. No, I don't actually think it will happen.

Too bad America is making diesel more and more expensive than gasoline. Not too long ago it was priced between midgrade and premium fuel. Now it is way higher than premium, to the point where the fuel economy advantage is made up by the cost of the fuel itself. I am second guessing a VW passat TDI for my wife after seeing the price of diesel now.

If they would only provide them with suspension they would be fun to drive. For Example, the Camry V6 has more than enough power, but needs better suspension to match the engines power.
