Consumer Watchdog Group Focuses On Elantra Mileage Claims
A consumer organization is going to bat for buyers of Hyundai Elantras who complain about the compact's gas mileage.

Reacting to media reports and website discussion boards, Consumer Watchdog, an outfit in Santa Monica, Calif., and Washington, is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to take a fresh look at the gas mileage ratings of the Elantra, which is officially rated at 29 miles a gallon in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and an average of 33 mpg.

If Hyundai ginned up their EPA numbers then they should pay a fine and be slammed but if their numbers were based on the EPA testing model, then all the hub-bub will be discredited as will all members of the Hyundai Haters club.

Go back and read my post. I said "but if their numbers were based on the EPA testing model".

I am not surprised by this, since a number of reviews have pointed this out. Despite cutting edge looks(which is selling a lot of cars for them right now)I don't believe I would choose a Hyundai or a Kia over a competitor just yet. I think I'd rather wait and see how many of them go 200K and are still desirable to drive.

There are also other groups that have acheived the stated figures. Let the EPA sort it out.

C&D Drove the Optima hard and still they couldn't get the mpg figure, a awe inspired 21mpg when they claim 22//35mpg. It's slow too.

If you drive any car hard you are not going to get good fuel economy. My land Rover Discovery gets about 14 in the city under normal driving, but If I drive it hard I go down to 10-12 mpg.

If you drive any car hard it isn't going to get its optimal fuel efficiency bottom line. Some cars, however can be driven hard ans still return good numbers, I agree, but they will never turn the same or better numbers if driven hard.
