VIDEO: Sport Sedan Drag RACE - BMW M5 vs. Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG vs. Jaguar XFR vs. Porsche Panamera S
For performance lovers of expensive sedans, it's a great time to be alive. Who would have thought that just about every foreign luxury automaker would have a 500 horsepower plus beast in their lineup?

This led EVO Magazine to set them up in a drag race. Although drag races aren't the best way to measure performance, it's one helluva way to display a vehicle's power.

My big beef with EVO's test is that they really didn't do the Porsche justice. While the BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar have over 500 ponies, the Porsche has a lowly 400. Considering the Panamera Turbo exists and the new Panamera Turbo S is on its way -- with 550 horsepower -- EVO sort of screwed Porsche over.

If this is strictly a performance test, this is really not the fair way to issue a "W."

The stats:

BMW M5: 560hp, 501 lb-ft torque from a 4.4-liter V8

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (AMG Performance Package): 550hp, 590 lb-ft torque from a 5.5-liter V8

Jaguar XFR: 510hp, 461 lb-ft torque from a 5.0-liter V8

Porsche Panamera S: 400hp, 369 lb-ft torque from a 4.8-liter V8

500BHP Panamera Turbo should have been used.

The M5 has already lapped the ring and other tracks faster than the Turbo. They probably did not use the turbo or turbo s b/c the M5 will start around 90K(along with the rest of the cars in the race) while the turbo starts around 140K, and the turbo s around 180K!!

It has better launch control, and a super fast DCT...but once under way the gap remained fairly even.

"Can someone please explain to me since I don't have vehicle weight #s in front of me: how does an M5 with only 10 more hp and 90 lbs. LESS torque beat that AMG??"

- Because it isn't always about numbers.

"lexsucks, I doubt anyone could explain to you that 1 + 1 = 2"

- What does that have to do about cars? 100% personal. LOL!!!

And to the mod who deleted my last reply. Seems as though you don't even want me to retaliate to the B.S. LOL!!! The post that was deleted most have hit a sore spot. HAHAHA!!!

I bet the Panamera turbo would've smoked all of them. That's the race I want to see. All awesome cars!

The Turbo/S would probably be quickest off the line, and maintain a lead to around 120, but at higher speeds AWD becomes a disadvantage, and the AMG, and M would gain back ground.

Why didn't they include the current Lexus GS-F? This is a "Sports Sedan" drag race right?

Lexus owners are grey hairs who don't drag race. They just putter along in the fast lane with their turn signal flashing.

- Yes. I get a big chuckle out of making you guys into puppets.

"I see BMW in the tread title, but I don't see Lexus!"

- Which was my point. A company as great as Lexus should have been represented? No. Just doesn't seem fair. Guess they new better because the Lexus GS-F would have mopped to floor with those other cars. Right?

"Anyway, where was EVO magazine going to get a GS-F?"

- From a Lexus dealership. Why are you ignoring the GS-F that is being sold right now? Does that not count?

"LexSUCKS, A company as great as Cadillac should have been represented?"

- Angry1InchPenis. You and I both know that Audi and Caddilac aren't as great as Lexus. Lexus is greater. I just went with the main brand that was snubbed. Lexus should have been represented. The Current GS-F (2011) is a class leader, M5 Killer, E63 AMG killer. Have you seen the thing in the showroom? Wow!!!

Where you not the same person that said the IS-F was going to kill and destroy the M3? How did that work for you? Not so good since the IS-F has Lost every comparison the M3. They went 0 for 6 and counting. Bring on the racer kit GS-F, LOL

Price wise is an ok comparison, But tech wise , nope, We need to put the Porsche Panamera Turbo S, XFRs version. Also where is the CTS V?.
94geo: You are right. LexSucks: Nope , I disagree with you. MB did a great but the will have to work on the NUMBERS, the relations of the gears Gravity Center and all that stuff. Example: The new M5 is around 500 pounds heavier than the E but it perform better cause it have a lower GC. The M5 is lager and wider but still have the height as the outgoing model and that excellent if you are looking stability. MB is great but now the will have to return to the drawing board If they want to stay inn the game and adjust the GC, design a wider tracks, and adjust the transmission. So I am happy cause the race keeps going BMW did a great job but the front of the E63 still better , the rest of the M5 is beautiful so now we need to see the Audi RS6 and what will do the rest..We are the winners , customers.........

Yonder, I can't find the weight of the 2012 E63, which has the heavier twin turbo V8 versus the previous 6.2L naturally aspirated V8. The 2011 E63 was 4084lbs, and BMW says the 2012 M5 is 4112lbs. So even if Benz manages to make the 2012 weigh the same as the 2011, the difference in weight between the E63 and M5 would only be 28lbs. And it's unlikely they managed to keep the weights the same -- C&D, for example, estimated the E63 at 4200-4300lbs.

2012 MB E63 4048, 2011 was 4084: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1107_2012_mercedes_benz_e63_amg_first_drive/index.html
BMW M5 4,465 lbs: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/f10-m5-discussion/190109-bmw-m5-f10-weights-only-40-kg-88-lbs-more-than-bmw-550i-f10-30-kg-66-lbs-less-than-550i-x-drive-f10-2.html
Also In fact the 2012 E is lighter for a few pounds. The fact is that all BMW are getting fat (not bad for me) cause that means better security , stronger structure and a lot of gadgets , but MB is that already so you and me do not want cars with almost the same qualities. I prefer a light M5 with just the necessary to pay with on tracks, for Roads i have a Benz. But now MB is toward BMW and BMW toward MB ...I hate that. I love superpowerful and at the same almost undetectable MB engine for a luxury car as MB once did, now all AMGs have a lot of noise and the loud and beautiful noise of any M car is so cushioned, that they have to add artificial noise in the cockpit? .please stop that. They should understand that but I guess $$$$$ are more important than customers. (now we need to wait for final numbers for American versions). Now you are right magazines have most of the times diferent numbers so you might be right but I saw it in person and look huge compared to the previous M5.

To me it seems like the bmw jumped the gun which may have been the cause of the outcome. I haven't really been the biggest fan of EVO testing.

That is some very fast company for a 4 door saloon. The M5 is an awesome car and all the reviews have been nothing short of spectacular.

In regards to the lexus GS-f, aren't you the same people that said the IS-F was going to destroy the M3? How did that work out for you? Not so good since it lost every head to head comparison to the M3.
