Head-To-Head: WHICH German 4-Dr Coupe ROCKS Your World? A7 vs. 6-Series Gran Coupe vs. CLS

Head-To-Head: WHICH German 4-Dr Coupe ROCKS Your World? A7 vs. 6-Series Gran Coupe vs. CLS
As Saturday's full-on announcement of the upcoming 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe hit the web, there was only ONE thing on my mind:

So, what does this mean for Audi and Mercedes-Benz?

In a relatively short period of time, the luxury four-door coupe market has become incredibly crowded with a slew of German luxury sedan/coupe/things. Although you may look at Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz's standard offerings and say "meh, they're cold," these slinky sedans all ooze sensuality in their own way.

But enough of the philosophical debate, we want to know WHICH you'd want in your garage at the end of the day.

Let's hear it, Spies. What's it going to be? The four rings? The Bavarian? Or the one that started it all?

**Please note the below pictures feature a 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, not an entirely fair comparison but still a CLS nonetheless...

I don't think there is a clear cut winner here - at least on styling.

I love the GranCoupe, it's downright gorgeous. My only reservation is that it lacks the coupe styling the CLS and A7 project, but other than that I'm in love!

A7 for the wife (she would love the interior) and BMW (from a handling perspective) for me. CLS AMG is a good mix of the 2.

Really? According to the release, the 640i Gran Coupe weighs 3850lbs. Not Lotus Exige numbers, obviously, but about 400lbs less than the A7 3.0T. The 650i Gran Coupe weighs 4100lbs, basically identical to the Mercedes CLS550 and 150lbs less than the A7 3.0T.

So... no.

I got the weights from BMW's press release here:

well, conspiracy theories aside, until Edmunds weighs all of these vehicles (to my knowledge they have so far weighed none of them), I am going to have to continue to compare the manufacturer stated weights against each other. Which is also what every magazine reviewing the cars will do. And using those manufacturer figures, the 6-Series Gran Coupe is significantly lighter than the A7, and basically identical to the CLS.

1. CLS
2. A7
3. GC
and reason to see the GC in this way is cause it does not have any inspiration on design side , is just a copy paste work and BMW i able to a lot better than that.

what about A7 then??

All great looking cars....I think I'm partial to the CLS though. I certainly wouldn't mind having any of those in my stable! The 650 looks very nice, I had yet to see photos of that. Not a fan of the color, so maybe that is throwing me off or that might be my first choice.

Could you post the 650 gran coupe in a worse color?
Having driven the new 6, driven the A7 and knowing MB heritage and styling... I will take the gran coupe. The better cockpit feel. Best controls for navigation. Overall driving dynamics. The M sport package in Imola Red, yes please! It will stand out that much more and that twin turbo V8 is a beast.

1. gran coupe: styling, interior, engine, handling, hope they drop the electric power steering or offer hydraulic as an option.
2. A7: exterior gorgeous, interior not as impressive in person, needs more than a supercharged 6 to compete, fantastic handling.
3. CLS: original was SO much better. this one just feels overwrought inside and out. engine is fantastic but driving dynamics aren't amazing for the money.

1. The CLS is the styling leader here. Classic styling and clearly defining the coupe styling profile of the car. The cons are the excessive and gaudy looking front headlight treatment. It seems in an effort to compete with Audi's simple yet awesome looking LED headlights MB took it a bit too far, at least in my taste.
2. I saw a white A7 with a sport package at my dealership and it looked so much better than any pictures I had seen of it. I could not take my eyes off that sporty cruiser. The car needs to have sporty tires/wheels to stand out, not the standard package ones.
3. BMW looks like it belongs in the mid-size sedan category, does not have the coupe look and feel. Looks are hardly revolutionary for this category. Brings nothing new to the segment.

how does a two door coupe stretched to four doors (6 Gran Coupe) look like it belongs in the "midsize sedan category" more than a midsize sedan with hatchback grafted on (A7)? I happen to think both look good, but the 6-Series is far more coupe-like in appearance than the A6 sedan-based A7, especially from the side. And from the front the 6 Gran Coupe looks like a two door 6-Series. The A7 looks like a four door A6 or A8 from the front.

for a clearer example of what I am talking about, let's remove all the brand bias. Look at a Honda Accord Crosstour. Is that a four door coupe? No? Then neither is the A7, certainly no more than the 6 Gran Coupe anyway.

the CLS is verging on TACKY. ridiculously overstyled--and far too many--character lines. interior is much too SHINY. your idea of stylish must be wearing multiple gold chains.

CLS,and GC are a tie for me, both look stunning.
The A7 looks cheaper inside and out compared to the other two, plus the rear design is awful.

Why no mention of the Panamera or Rapide?

Gran coupe---Exterior styling, interior, engines.

CLS---Looks nice but not as good and German looking as Gran coupe, interior design is also weak.

A7---Not a fan of the styling especially rear end when seen from side. Also unlike CLS and Gran coupe, A7's interior is too close to the lesser models A6 and refreshed A4 and not an individual interior design.

They all look good, the panamera should be included also.

I just saw this the 650 GC gets an uprated version on the 4.4 V8.

"The new version of the engine (N63Tü) develops a maximum 445 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (a 45 hp increase), and makes peak torque of 480 lb-ft between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm (a 30 lbs-ft increase)."

The Mercedes is overwrought outside, too many lines and creases, inside is ok. The A7 looks nice but IMHO it looks too much like a hatchback and not a real coupe, the Gran Coupe is a 6 Coupe with four doors, so my vote is GC.
