2012 Fiat 500 Takes A Blow After Receiving A Dismal 3 Star Crash Rating
The slow-selling 2012 Fiat 500 now has another obstacle in its sales path: It has been tagged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a three-star safety rating, the lowest of any new model tested so far.

The two-door subcompact received four stars from NHTSA for frontal crash and rollover accidents but received just two stars for side-impact crash safety, the agency announced on its Web site, safercar.gov.

Hardly a POS.

Just not designed to withstand side collisions from NA behemoths like Expeditions and Denalis : )

Sorry, but if it's not capable of saving my life in a less than extreme accident, then I DEFINITELY would not buy one or recommend anyone consider it. Period. I nearly was collided with head on (guessing the driver was going 80-100mph) as a criminal was running from the law today and I am happy to be in a 335i that would do a good job of protecting me, you just never know what can happen on the road. I am not willing to gamble, personally, by saving a buck versus say buying a "better" built car (a MINI for example.)

It wasn't designed to withstand a 20mph impact from a narrow pole apparently

A Polo. I don't think Polo's are sold in the US of A. In the European tests the Fiat 500 earned a 5 star rating. Therefore you really cannot say how a Polo would fair here unless it is sold here. The obvious comparison is Mini. Never the less the side impact area is where Fiat will have to improve.

35/37 for EuroNCAP in 2008, 5 stars. Talk about inconsistent mechanisms for measuring vehicle safety across the globe..
