Camry In Danger Of Becoming An Also Ran In The Mid Sized Segment?
Toyota Motor Corp. was already counting on the revamped Camry to spark a U.S. sales rally. The carmaker’s flagship model is now under additional pressure as a stronger currency and Thailand’s floods cut into profit.

The company reduced its earnings forecast last week by more than 50 percent for the year ending in March, blaming a slump in production after Thailand’s worst floods in almost 70 years. The 2012 Camry was released in October with a goal of boosting sales hurt by Japan’s earthquake and tsunami and retaining its title as the top-selling U.S. passenger car.

“There’s a lot of pressure on that car,” said Maryann Keller, an auto analyst and president at Maryann Keller & Associates. “It’s been reviewed as being competitive within the midsize sedan segment, but not that much better or worse than competitors. Right now, the perceived design leader is Hyundai’s Sonata, and Kia’s Optima is also doing well.”

What is that pic -- a concept Camry...it doesn't look too bad (compared to the lame "new" one)....

Nothing wrong with the Camry (or the Accord for that matter). Well built at a competative price but, competitors saw the light and are making equal or better quality and features at comperable or lower prices.

Agreed. And boo those that skipped the article entirely as well...

To think, if Toyota hadn't been pulled into the "sudden unintended acceleration" investigation and not been severely affected by 2-3 natural disasters, how much stronger (more market share) would it have today?

And how would its current lineups (Toyota, Scion, Subaru, Lexus) look like if the embattled corporation hadn't needed to divert funding for settlements, re-building, etc.

The Toyota Camry is the class leader. The Camry outperforms all cars in its class and approaches the BMW 3-series in the handling department. Reputable sources have even stated that the all-new Camry out-performs the BMW 3-series.

This is just the beginning. Expect more class leading performance orientated cars from Toyota. The beast has been released!!!!

The Camry is an improved car over the previous one. Unfortunately it's styling makes it look like an overgrown Corolla. It is unfortunate that the earthquake and the flooding in Thailand hurt their ability to bring in enough cars. However the unintended acceleration scandal and Toyota's poor PR has enabled Ford,GM and Chrysler to regroup and improve their offerings. Consequently they have been able to grab the some previously lost market share. Hyundai/Kia have also now cut into both Toyota and Honda's market share.Everybody has upped their game now.The new Ford Fusion replacement looks to be even more formadable then the current car being based on the Euro Mondeo. And lets not overlook the compact sedan C segment. Frankly the Corolla and Civic simply do not cut it in today's market. The Focus, Cruz, Elantra, and the upcoming new Dodge Dart, I think are really going to severly hurt Corolla and Civic sales.Even VW is starting to cut into the market share now. The Passat and Jetta(say what you will about them) are definately making positive headway. I don't think at this moment that hybrid vehicles are going to enable Toyota and Honda to dig out of their hole.

Let's withhold judgment until people have had enough time to drive the thing. If it's that good, we'll certainly know in 12 months.

I'm not bashing Toyota. But I think it is fair to guess that the Camry is in a potentially difficult struggle for market share due to the tough competition.
