Ford Claims 2012 Focus Electric Will Get 100 MPG

Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday that the 2012 Ford Focus Electric will be the first five-passenger electric vehicle to get the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon.

The figures were released prior to an event at the Michigan Assembly Plant to mark the start of production of the electric compact car that will lead the field of electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid.

Ford also developed a car that will charge in half the time of the Nissan Leaf, the only other real competitor on the market to date. The charge time is about three hours with 240-volt outlets.

Yes but this thing will probably cost over 30 grand. Probably closer to 40 grand. Until precious metals are able to be mined in this country, as well as other critical parts to eletric vehicles there is always going to be limited success. This is due to the great difference in cost to the consumer. Also who has 3 hours to kill during the work week if you have to be somewhere. Therefore this cannot be your only car. Regarding 100 MPG the question is how many miles can you travel between recharges. If it's just 100 miles to me that is usless. Until they can cut the charging time to say 15 minutes, until people can go 300 plus miles between recharges, until the base price of an EV is no more then 5% more then the equivalent gasoline version to buy average people are simply not going to flock to EV's.
