GM Steps In To Honor Saab Warranties
General Motors Co. said Tuesday it will extend warranty coverage to owners of thousands of Saab vehicles sold before February 2010, while Saab's North American board met to decide its next steps.

Saab North America, which is based in Royal Oak and has about 50 employees, said it is halting warranty coverage on current vehicles and models for sale at dealerships in the wake of Monday's bankruptcy filing by its parent Saab Automobile AB in Sweden.

Saab spokeswoman Michele Tinson said the company has also stopped dealer incentive payments for vehicles at showrooms. Only a few thousand Saab vehicles are at its 188 U.S. dealer showrooms.

GM spokesman Jim Cain said GM is working to notify Saab customers that it will step in.

so GM get a huge bailout, but shamelessly point its finger at SAAB and stopped it when SAAB need a bailout?

SAAB was part of GM, it was sold off. Good for GM for going the extra step and helping out SAAB owners. It's cheaper for them since they share components, and it helps with their reputation.

ghosthunter: I disagree. GM's financial situation was different from SAAB's situtation. GM sold SAAB to a company that, as it turns out, couldn't afford it. So SAAB has been passed around and limping along on less than minimal funding. SAAB execs should have known that GM would not approve of a SAAB sale to a Chinese company considering GM has a lot of contract tie-ups there as well. SAAB was thinking that the sale would zip thru & they would let GM handle all the patent & technology issues afterwards.

Wrong.

A couple months ago, GM sent a memo to GM dealerships instructing them NOT to service SAAB vehicles—even vehicles with extended warranties purchased through GM. So where does that leave SAAB owners?

A couple months ago SAAB was still its own viable company. Now that they have went through bankruptcy this article states clearly that SAAB owners are now allowed to get their vehicles serviced and warranties maintained through GM.
