Audi Races to Catch BMW - And It Might Happen Sooner Than Expected!
Audi AG is racing to close the sales gap with BMW AG the worlds largest luxury car maker, and it may get there faster than expected. Audi, which is owned by German auto giant Volkswagen AG, is already on track to overtake Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz brand as the world's second-best selling premium marque after BMW by selling 1.3 million cars this year, and expects to grow faster than the overall car market in 2012 as prices hold firm despite slowing economic growth worldwide, according to Chief Executive Rupert Stadler.

"We're planning for another surge of growth next year," Mr. Stadler said in a recent interview in his office at the firm's headquarters in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, 50 miles north of Munich.

Wait, are you saying the A3 is a 3series competitor? lol

Taste the fail? Is that what you're tasting?

You're saying bmw fans don't believe that the 3 series sell very well.

That link is US sales…

The Global model break down would be much different..The A3/A1 are very popular in Europe and Asia..

Also, doesn't Audi sell a higher percentage of their fleet as the a3 then BMW does the 1series?

A1/A3 sales make up 26.6% of the sales according to your source.

BMW on the other hand only has about 13% 1 Series sales on a global basis.

"No, BMW fanboys think that only Audi base models account for all of their success, and deny that the 328i (BMW's entry-level vehicle up until 2 years ago)is carrying them. Christ, less than 15% of all 3 series sold are in 335i form."

Right. And what percentage of A4/A5's's are sold as S4/S5's again? Hello kettle? This is pot calling. You're black.

Pondi, you brought up the 335 vs. 328 sales comparison, not me. The 3-Series isn't BMW's base model, either, that's the 1-Series. The 335 competes with the S4/S5, they are direct competitors. So if you're going to bring up 335 vs 328 sales as an indicator of some kind, then the same holds true for Audi with the A4/A5 vs. S4/S5. If the 335 making up 15% of 3-Series' sales isn't good enough for you you might want to check your numbers before throwing stones. I'd bet the S4/S5 percentages are even lower than that compared to the "normal" A4/A5. And BMW doesn't even have an A1 competitor, unless you want to include Mini Cooper sales in BMW's figures.

In the US the S4/S5 are about 15% of the sales as well. There is no A1 competitor from BMW yet, but isn't one due in a year or two?

I wouldn't call it consistent, it's really quite hit and miss when you post polarizing opinions.

the consumer doesn't benefit when they buy an Audi. unless of course they enjoy being at the dealer and driving a loaner about once a month after their vehicle takes a shit.

Merry Christmas, pondosinatra.

"Skoda parts"? As in the parts are labeled?

THIS IS IS A SKODA 6-SPEED M/T TRANSMISSION. USE IN AUDI/VW PRODUCT PLEASE.

You mean like that?

Gee, I guess there are TOYOTA PARTS IN LEXUS CARS THEN.

Haven't seen any Skoda stamps on any parts inside Volkswagens that I looked at. Did you know that the Jetta uses cylinder heads from a Lamborghini or that the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid uses the exact same powertrain as a Volkswagen. What should Porsche and Lamborghini do now?

And Minis and future BMWs use/will use Peugeot parts, what do you say about that?

WillisWillis - 12/22/2011 9:51:50 PM

What is wrong with "Skoda parts"? Skoda makes excellent cars. They have a reputation in Europe for value, reliability and quality. I guess you could say they're the mainstream "European Toyota" brand.

Furthermore, Skoda doesn't produce any important parts - Volkswagen does. All the components in a Skoda are manufactured by Volkswagen and their suppliers and they're distributed along the brands where they're needed. That means Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen.

I can never understand why people make a big deal out of parts sharing. If the parts are EXCELLENT and THEY WORK WELL, then why not use them across the lineup? Why WASTE MONEY creating "new parts" just so people like you will feel satisfied? Such a move will only up the prices on these cars.

Most buyers obviously don't care. It's a trivial matter, really.

I personally could care less if there are "Skoda parts" in an Audi or "Toyota parts" in a Lexus. That won't change anything about how good the car is.

It will be hard for AUDI. BMW main sales comes from the 3 series some times as much as 40% but we need to wait how it works with the new 3 (which, imo is ugly)...........
