Volkswagen says 2,000 workers have accepted severance packages

Volkswagen AG said Tuesday about 2,000 workers have accepted severance packages that the automaker is offering as part of a cost-cutting drive.

The company is moving ahead faster than expected with its efforts to trim jobs, Volkswagen spokesman Stefan Ohletz said.

The automaker has said up to 20,000 jobs could be cut over the next three years amid efforts to make it more internationally competitive.
