SPIED: The All-New BMW 3-Series/4-Series Coupe Get Nabbed In Action
Caught testing in the wild was the all-new 3-Series/4-Series coupe.

Nabbed in the wild and on public roads outside of what appears to be BMW's headquarters, located in Germany, we get the chance to see the new vehicle next to current production models. This gives us the chance to size it up next to real-world cars, which is hard to do in normal spy images.

Speculation still hints that the 4-Series nameplate will stick; however, there hasn't been official word from BMW yet. According to sources, a 4-Series badge would allow BMW to price the vehicle at a premium.

The previous comment is spot on. Prices for autos have rapidly escalated.
When you figure in the even greater depreciation, the huge tax bite, we are talking MAJOR ownership experience expense. Only Daddy Warbucks will be buying such dear vehicles.

High end cars are pricing themselves out of reach. Manufacturers will have no one to blame but themselves.

Devaluation of the U.S. Dollar v. Euro exacerbates the issue.

Prices may swing to our favor if the Euro collapses like many expect it to - unless the German DM suddenly reappears and then the exchange rate would be really ugly.

Wasn't that a BMW chime heard @0:50secs? So BMW is "spying" their own cars now?

I agree with LACHMAN and senorgato, a simple look at the video tells you this is an official release from BMW and not a spy shot. There are simply too many views, angles, approaches, etc. for this to be captured spontaneously. Don't call it what it is not. This is not a spy capture it is simply a tantalizing release.

Now on to the "naming." Calling this a 4 series would piss me off and I am a huge BMW fan. The last thing they need to do is add a car between the 3 and 5. Take a lesson out of the GM book and avoid too many products. Apple has shown has that doing a few things well is far smarter than doing a lot of things halfassed. No matter how capable a company is, a product line that is too extensive will be a problem. I already think BMW has too much on its plate. They have the following in the U.S. (not to mention the differences from elsewhere:

1 series: coupe - 128i, 135i / convertible - 128i, 135i (4 cars)

3 series: coupe - 328i, 328i X, 335i, 335is / convertible - 328i, 328i X, 335i, 335is / sedan - 328i, 328i X, 335i, 335i X / sport wagon - 328i, 328i X (14 cars)

5 series: sedan 528i, 528i X, 535i, 535i X, 550i, 550i X / Gran Turismo 535i, 535i X, 550i, 550i X (10 cars)

6 series: coupe 640i, 650i, 650iX / convertible 640i, 650i, 650iX (6 cars)

7 series: sedan 740i, 740Li, 750i, 750i X, 750Li, 750Li X, 760Li, 750i active hybrid, 750Li active hybrid (9 cars - not including the B7)

X3: 28i, 35i (2 cars)

X5: 35i, 35i premium, 35i SA, 35d, 50i (5 cars)

X6: X6 active hybrid, 35i, 50i (3 cars)

Z4: 28i, 35i, 35is (3 cars)

M: 1M / M3 - coupe, convertible, M5 (soon), X5M, X6M (6 cars)

Now I know they share components, engines, etc., but we are still talking about 68 cars before options and other customizations. Most of the sales are from the 3 series, 5 series, X3, and X5. In fact, sales of the 3 series alone equal more than the 1 series, Z4, 6 series, X6, and 7 Series combined. It seems like a little trimming of the fat so to speak would be in order. Keep the 3, 5, 7 line. Lose the 1 series and the X6. X3 and X5 are top sellers, so keep them as well. Z4 and 6 need to be narrowed down to a single car in each category, whatever sells best. In the other series, look at what sells and whittle things down. Do we really need 9 different 7 series? Hell no. Few people buy the short wheelbase compared to the long. Kill it.

This is probably just the next 3 series coupe, but for the love of god and everything holy I hope they are planning a 4 series.

Just noticed the last line of my post it should say hope they are NOT planning a 4 series.

Agreed, just add a "C" to all the coupes. 335i and 335Ci
