AWESOME or AWFUL? Audi's Next-Gen RS4 Will Be Built But Maybe NOT How YOU Like It
Some enthusiasts go gaga over wagons while others find them pretty lame. Regardless of what you may wish though, Audi has let it out that the next-generation RS4 will make it to production but ONLY in avant form.

And this isn't just a rumor that's been floating around, this has been quoted from the boss of Audi's exclusive Quattro division. We think he knows best in this kind of situation.

According to Stephan Riel, the company's research is showing a lacking market for a high-end performance sedan while the wagon variant shows stronger demand.

That said, is this the BEST news you've heard all day or did this just ruin your weekend?

Weigh in down below...

Audi is turning back the clock for the next generation of RS-badged A4s by restricting the new RS4 to a five-door Avant bodystyle only.

The reasons are threefold: hot Avant models have historically outsold saloon versions, the S5 Sportback offers a performance four-door alternative and the market is moving away from hot four-doors.

“We will continue with the RS4 Avant, which has traditionally accounted for the majority of European sales,” says the boss of Audi’s quattro division, Stephan Riel, "but our research suggests the market for a saloon version is now rather limited..."

What is it with the recent wave of hot wagons? The CTS-V, E63 AMG, and now this? It's wonderful!

All the wagons you mentioned here (plus the RS4) are AWESOME! I'd drive any of those in a heartbeat and those who find them lame will be left in a cloud of dust/tiresmoke anyway, so who cares?

I actually wouldn't buy the E63 - it's automatic-only. But the CTS-V wagon is too cool for words.

Personally, I think this is fantastic news.

It's not like Audi hasn't always been a hot wagon automaker. And, I adore wagons.

terrible news, since that's going to be a bad b!tch and probably not coming to the US so I can buy one 15 years later

I wouldn't say it won't make it to the US.

Last gen RS4 made it AND there's a hot wagon trend now. If anything, I think that would give it at least a 60/40 chance of yes/no.

What is with these fast wagons? I still haven't seen a single CTS-V or E63 wagon. I don't see how anyone could possibly be making money off them.

I'd be surprised to see it come stateside... I think it will be one of those magical Euro-gems like the RS3

Wagons make far more sense than an SUV 90% of the time. People don't need the bulk and weight and cost of an SUV to pick up the kids and get groceries and visit granny.
I had an A6 Avant about 12 years ago and it was a wonderful jack of all trades that drove and handled extremely well. Today, people are accustomed to the shape of a wagon.
Why not have carrying capacity, fuel efficiency and the advantages of a great driving car in one package? Ergo...the Avant!

Not bad news at all. I prefer the Avant to the Sedan version anyway. There is more to say about an Avant that can kick almost any sports car's ass than a more common sports sedan. The RS4 Avants have always look sexy and powerful. I love the look of them over the sedan.
