DETROIT AUTO SHOW: If It's Good Enough For Tony Stark Is It Good Enough For YOU? Did Acura Do Something RIGHT Here?
Back when the glitz and glam of Hollywood was visiting New York City to film The Avengers, the internet had an early look at the prototype Acura NSX roadster. To be straightforward, it was a sleek, sexy, mid-engined convertible that reminded me a lot of the Audi R8 that Tony Stark was usually seen piloting.

Initially denied at first, Acura finally warmed up and let folks know that a new NSX was being developed. Today, finally, the cat's out of the bag and of course there are some intriguing surprises.

Take, for example, the fact the new NSX will be developed in Ohio, feature a V6 -- I guess we should have expected that after all these years -- and all-wheel drive will make an appearance. Here's the kicker: A new NSX should hit the market within THREE years.

Aside from those trivial details, we're curious about one factor: Does this live up to the original AND would you want to pick one of these up over another high-performance coupe?

Acura's press release follows:

Acura today announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that an all-new Acura NSX supercar will be manufactured in Ohio. In addition, the new sports car will be developed in the U.S., including the Ohio Center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. (HRA).

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO Takanobu Ito unveiled a concept version of the Acura NSX today in Detroit.  Although Acura is keeping most of the vehicle's details under wraps, the new NSX will employ a lightweight chassis, a mid-mounted V-6 engine and Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system.  Ito said the new supercar will come to market within three years.

Along with unveiling the NSX concept, Ito announced that it will be built in Ohio.  Honda plans to produce the new supercar near its current auto production operations in central Ohio at a unique, advanced manufacturing operation. The original Acura NSX was built at Honda plants in Japan from 1990 to 2005.

"Honda associates are up to the challenge of producing the new NSX for global customers with a high degree of craftsmanship," said Hidenobu Iwata, head of Honda's North American manufacturing operations and president of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.  "Honda associates in Ohio have been building high-quality Honda and Acura vehicles for nearly 30 years, so this news in many ways is a culmination of their determined efforts."

A team from HRA Ohio Center will lead the continued design and development of the new vehicle.  Headquartered in Torrance, Calif., Honda R&D Americas has major research and vehicle development operations in the Raymond, Ohio center, where much of the work on the NSX will take place.

"We have a rich history of creating innovative new products for our customers in the U.S. and in markets around the world," said Hiroshi Takemura, president of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. "The responsibility to develop the all-new Acura NSX demonstrates the maturity of our organization, the know-how of our associates and their ability to create an advanced and innovative supercar."

The R8 is a modern day NSX so it kinda makes sense that the new NSX looks kinda like an R8

Glad I'm not the only one who saw the R8 cues, down to the wheels even

I don't know what you're smoking, drinking, inhaling or injecting, but crazy pills do not seem to do it justice. Not only is the design of this car clean and uncluttered, it has a futuristic essence about it that does not diminish the high-level sporty aggressiveness.

By the way, this design is not American inspired. I see the MP14-C in the rear quarter panels, Carerra GT in the rear, R8 and McLaren silhouette with some Honda touches(Civic and CRV) headlights up front.

Badgewhore would it look better if they used the same microwaved cheese block design that most Japanese cars manufacturers use?

that lexus concept has some sharp lines. Melted cheese block would be more like the current civic/camry/corolla/prius etc etc.

i think this car looks great, assuming it will be priced as the last nsx( 90-100k) it will have its hands full in beating the nissan GTR. not that i expect it to, but i hope it comes close...

definitely lots of competition in the 100k market give or take 20k... Aston Martin Vantage, Audi r8, Bmw M6, corvette zr-1, Mercedes sl550, Nissan gtr, porsche 911

There is a big hole in the market...its between 60-75K for a fully loaded
sports car with high quality feel good features that out handles (not
out accelerate) everybody and puts a big, big smile on your face. Leave
the power for power sake (you cannot use it all on the roads) to others
and make a car with great soul. Make it visceral, make it now !

Why do people keep comparing this to the R8? The R8 is round and curvy like a supercar beetle, this thing is a ruler with wheels :S

Joe,

Check the front overhang and the rear and their relative proportions on a perfectly straight view and then look at the fender proportions relative to the wheels. I think this is where the R8 similarities come into play. Under other angles or looking at the overall shape, these cars are far apart.

From my vantage point, this is not a bad looking car, quite the contrary, but if I saw one tomorrow, I couldn't tell what brand it was. It's too 'generic' and seems to lack personality.

The R8 definitely wasn't the first supercar to use these proportions though. It's common among all mid engined supercars.

I'm not exactly in love with the front grille, but I could get used to it. The rest of the car is flawless.

I think its very nice. The original NSX was trying to be a Ferrari in it's style. This thing is much more original, and it is beautiful.
I am anxious to see which car maker will introduce a green sportscar that will make us lust for it as if it were old style powered one.

No visual risks here which is predictable for Honda. Too many styling cues from other cars that are obvious, and not very original.

Does anyone see the grill portion just below the emblem; they just had to get some aspect of the "bird grill" incorporated into the car. Otherwise it's a cool looking car.

Please Acura Please - do not continue with this bird grille. The rest is a great new design but it is time that you stop with this ugly front end theme on all your cars....just admit you made a mistake and move on with it...BMW finally (after years of uglyness) threw out the Bangle
butts so it time you get away from this front end madness that you seem to have.

I'm a big fan of Italian designed exotics, fan of Euro sedans and older sports cars, Japanese not so much.
But this thing is BADASS.
I'm going to need mine in a targa version

The look and proportions are straight from the designs of the 1990's.
Only the details like lights and wheels are fresh.

That iconic Acura 'JOKER' grille has GOT to go! It is HIDEOUS.
