DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Acura Unveils The Civic-Inspired ILX Concept. Did Acura Do Something WRONG Here?

DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Acura Unveils The Civic-Inspired ILX Concept. Did Acura Do Something WRONG Here?
Years ago, Acura use to offer affordable offerings like the Integra and RSX. These days you can't touch anything below $30,000 smackers thanks to the TSX.

Well, Acura is setting out to change that with an all-new concept it displayed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. That, my friends, is the ILX.

But there is one catch: It is largely based on the Honda Civic.

That could actually work FOR the brand as many Honda loyalists love their Civic but want to trade UP for a set of fancier wheels. It also could be a risky move because who wants to cough up some serious dough for a Civic?

Acura claims it will be priced well below the $30K mark but, of course, no estimates were thrown out there.

So, we divert this conundrum to you, our faithful Spies: Is this a genius move to get Acuras in the hands of younger buyers OR is this a risky play?

Either way you flip the coin, Infiniti's missing out...

Acura's press release follows:

Acura ILX Concept

The Acura ILX Concept is the precursor to an all-new Acura luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in Spring 2012. To be positioned as the gateway to the Acura brand, the ILX will feature three different powertrains, including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid.

"First time luxury buyers place the highest value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues and that's a virtual definition of what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."

Sleek, sporty and aerodynamically efficient, the exterior of the all-new Acura ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. A beautifully styled luxury sedan, the ILX Concept has a compact, yet formal proportion, targeting a very professional image. The Acura ILX delivers both, with a greenhouse that provides excellent visibility, an aerodynamic low and wide stance, the ILX is immediately recognizable as an Acura

The lineup of ILX models will include an entry-level model powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine; a high-performance model with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission; and a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, Acura's first-ever hybrid offering.

The ILX will feature a high–quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features, including a smart entry keyless access system and pushbutton start, along with Pandora internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

As with all Acura models, the ILX will have a long list of standard features, different trim levels (that will include a Technology Package), multiple transmission choices, and excellent standard safety features— including Acura's acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA™). Acura anticipates that the ILX will achieve top ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS crash safety testing.

The new ILX will be manufactured exclusively by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC, in its Greensburg, Ind. plant— one of only three plants in the world to receive J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Platinum Award for outstanding quality.

Note to Honda, besides the "beak", this is the design direction your next Accord should be heading. Another bland and dull designed Accord that hits the American market may sink you.

No worse than the Polo inspired A1 or the golf inspired A3.

Like so many once great companies lead by founders with vision, passion
and conviction that spiral downward from greatness to mediocrity Honda
/Acura started a slow slide after old man Honda died and now are in total freefall. They have lost their way and the spirited will that built them. A sad but common story with only a few exceptions.

Some SH-AWD would do quite well. How about the Turbo 4 cylinder from the RDX to boot?

I'm really liking it as well. Elegant yet sporty. Best interpretation of the "beak" yet.

Sorry, but the grille on a car has little to do with my buying decision. I think those who are so focused on something as trivial as that should be sure to bring their mommy along when they go out to shop for a car. Get over it!
I like this ILX(yeah, it is a weird name, too)but this is what the Civic should have been. I think both the ILX and the Civic were finalized about the same time and Honda just wasn't capable of distinguishing the two without leaving the Civic bland bland bland.
And the Civic platform has sucked since they abandoned the wishbone front suspension. I had a 2002 Civic that was just plain awful. I dumped it early on.
Also, why did they "gum up" the TSX ? This thing will probably cost almost as much as the last gen TSX and not be nearly as substantial. Nice motor, though.
For the first time in a long time it is a positive step for Honda, I suppose, albeit, minimal.

Why Honda did not do somthing like this with the Civic is beyond me. Also now that I've seen pictures of the redesigned Accord Coupe Honda has gone and done it again. The Accord Coupe looks too similar to the current one. The only difference is that it has a few more scoopes and chrome on it. They say it is slightly shorter.Honda needs some new designers. Asfor this car I like it. It has a nice crisp design to it. The beak on the grill is less promenant for some reason here. Probably becasue the rest of the design stands out in equal measure. Good job Acura. Now go and redesign your sisters cars. They need help and now!

This is what the new civic should have been minus the bird beak grill! good looking car by the way. This is what the Civic needed to be to compete with the Focus.

Agreed. The new civic looks like a downgrade from the previous one. This is what the civic needed to be in order to compete with the new Dodge Dart and Ford Focus. I see Honda losing many customers except for its loyalist customers.

What's the different the TSX and ILX? I can't see the justification.

The TSX is off the Accord platform, much more substantial.

And yeah, the Fusion is a giant leap--could kick the ass of everything in the class.

The new Accord is just a refinement of the last gen, but that's what's needed. This new one has to get back to what made the Accord a success years ago---more reasonable size, lighter, sportier driving feel, trim up the ugly front end, superior balance of power/economy, and conservative "just right" attitude.

Acura blew it when they changed their model line up to an alpha system. They should have kept the Legend and Integra names around.

That said. This does look very good. If priced well below $30k and has a nice interior, it could do very well. See this cannibalizing TSX sales though.

Why are Honda and Toyota doing re-freshes instead of redesigns. I remember every 5 years their cars were completely re-designed. Now they are doing what the big 3 from detroit used to do, which lead to their downfall. I still can't believe the roles have changed and they now have the most recalls and are coming up with uninspiring refreshes of previous models and hyping them up. Someone needs to light a fire under them because the Americans and Koreans are moving in. the New camry is already outdated looking and will once again be slaughtered by the competition as far as appeal is concerned. I used to like Toyota but now they are nowhere near being on my shopping list.
