DETROIT AUTO SHOW: If You Were Lincoln Would You Be Banking  On the New MKZ To Kickstart Your Brand?
The new Lincoln MKZ Concept, revealed today at the North American International Auto Show, signals a significant step in Lincoln's reinvention, providing a clear vision of its next-generation vehicles.

"With the Lincoln MKZ Concept, we are not introducing a new car. We are essentially introducing a new brand," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford Motor Company group vice president for Global Product Development. "The MKZ Concept is the next step in the reinvention of Lincoln, something we've been quietly but aggressively pursuing."

Lincoln MKZ Concept: Exterior


The MKZ Concept strongly hints at the production model arriving in dealerships later this year, as well as Lincoln's design future.



"The MKZ Concept's shape is a vision of simplicity completed with just a few strokes," said Max Wolff, Lincoln design director. "Our movement as a brand is toward something we call elegant simplicity. It's something warmer and more restrained, which is moving away from complex designs and traditional luxury."



Warm hues are evident in every aspect of the new vehicle's Cognac-colored exterior. The deep finish is achieved with a rich base coat covered in multiple layers of tinted clear-coat finishes.

By retaining key, recognizable brand design elements, the MKZ Concept remains clearly identifiable as a Lincoln. One example is the more refined interpretation of the split-wing grille, introduced on the 1938 Lincoln-Zephyr.



The sedan's profile is dominated by a long, sleek and sweeping roofline that allows the design to break away from the traditional sedan three-box shape. The lengthening of the roofline enables a more flowing, elegant and more naturally aerodynamic appearance.



A panoramic glass roof spans uninterrupted from the windshield to the top of the backlight. Integrated into the sedan's aluminum and boron steel superstructure, the fixed-glass expanse extends to the side roof rails of the cabin, creating an airy, open interior.



LED technology enabled an extremely thin and distinctive full-width taillamp graphic. Exhaust tips are cleanly integrated into the rear fascia.



Lincoln MKZ Concept: Interior


The Lincoln MKZ Concept's four-seat interior is open, warm and inviting. "The front graphic is repeated in the dramatic sweep of the instrument panel, helping tie the interior to the exterior. These flowing forms create a comfortable and functional interior that particularly appeals to the younger, more diverse customers we are targeting," said Wolff.

Innovative interior features include push-button transmission gear selection, an open, tiered center console and liquid crystal instrumentation. The reconfigurable 10.1-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD positioned ahead of the driver operates with the latest version of MyLincoln Touch™ as does the nearly flush-mounted center 8-inch LCD touch screen.



Responsibly harvested poplar wood, aluminum in bright and satin finishes as well as leather help create a sculptural, luxurious and comfortable interior space. Champagne-colored leather seats with dark taupe accents feature a champagne perforation pattern, so-called because the perforations on the seat backs conjure the image of champagne bubbles rising from the bottom of a glass.

Lincoln MKZ Concept: Engineering

The Lincoln MKZ Concept is a styling study that rides on an all-new midsize platform. The sedan is capable of utilizing multiple powertrain options in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.



Like the recently introduced MKS and MKT with EcoBoost™, the Lincoln MKZ Concept features Lincoln Drive Control and the sophisticated Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) adjustable suspension. The Business of Lincoln

"Lincoln is an important part of our company's success," said Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company president of The Americas. "The luxury piece of the industry is significant. In any given year in the U.S., the luxury segment is 11 to 13 percent of overall sales, and it is important for us to win customers in the luxury market with strong new vehicles. That is a key reason we have invested so heavily in Lincoln."

During the past 14 months, Lincoln has built a dedicated team – including designers, engineers, quality and manufacturing experts as well as marketing and sales leaders. The team includes people from luxury brands, some outside of automotive.



"This team wakes up every morning thinking about Lincoln – and only Lincoln," Fields said. "These are the people committed to delivering world-class vehicles with a customer experience to match."

Many of the new team members begin working this year in the all-new Lincoln Design Studio in Dearborn, Mich.
Under Wolff's direction, construction of the 40,000-square-foot studio began in early 2011 and ultimately will house more than 180 modelers, engineers, stylists and designers in a space that encourages creativity and collaboration.

"This is the first time Lincoln has had its own studio since the 1970s," said Wolff. "Having our own space is critical to the continued development of the brand. We are passionate about creating beautiful, even seductive, vehicles – and the MKZ Concept marks just the beginning."

It doesn't look bad but it isn't as powerful a statement as the recent Lexus coupe or Acura NSX. But much of what we see could make it straight to production.

This is a beautiful concept. However, I can't believe it is anything close to what an actual production version would look like, as we've seen so many times in the past.
I haven't owned an American brand in many years, but I am so encouraged by the efforts of the big 3 lately, especially Ford. I would like to see the Lincoln brand renewed, and this MKZ could be a significant step toward that.

Not bad looking at all. But Ford really has no clue what to do with Lincoln. They should stop wasting money trying to go upmarket with this brand and shut it down. Ford paid a British consultant a lot of money to have them tell Ford what Lincoln was! Not very bright.

Looks nice, I hope the center console goes through a few more revisions. It looks cheap and apple styled, which doesn't tie in with the rest of the design.

Another thing I noticed, look at how large those sheet metal pieces are, a small fender bender and you'll be replacing a third of the sheet metal on your car!

To answer the question, absolutely NOT. Again and nothing new about this, there's it absolutely NOTHING compelling about this car, it's dull, very very basic, front wheel layout, and just dull!!

I kind of shuddered when I read that it was FWD as well, then I realized that this is a car for geriatrics, as such they could care less if it was rwd. This isn't a performance car of any sorts.

The issue isn't the MKZ. Is this concept the right direction Lincoln should head? Honestly, ANY direction is the right direction for Lincoln to head. Is the MKZ concept good? Sure it's good. Should Lincoln bank on the new MKZ to kickstart the brand? NO! Although the Fusion's mid-size platform is pretty good, we all know for a luxury brand to be taken seriously, it needs a performance oriented RWD/AWD platform. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Acura, Volvo, and Lincoln: GET IT TOGETHER OR WATCH YOUR BRANDS CRUMBLE. Design is not enough.

Agree. Can you imagine a FWD Jaguar XJ or a FWD Mercedes E Class? These are Lincoln's target niche and IMO a real luxury sedan should be RWD.

Overall design is just so-so. The general silhouette looks good but Lincoln needs to start from scratch on the stodgy front fascia and also revamp the dual grill concept as it's somewhat stale and really does nothing for Lincoln's identity. In addition, the rear side window pillars appear to be eerily similar to the new Cadillac XTS sedan.

When I look at this car, I think Jaguar, which is a good thing. The problems are the front design is horrible, it won't look like this when it enters production and I think Ford will price it out of the segment it should be marketed.

Lincoln is no longer a brand than can be marketed directly against a BMW, Mercedes, etc. This car, if priced correctly with the same level of detail, could kill the mid $35,000 to $45,000 segment.

First thing they need to do is get rid of the stupid MK__ naming. It only makes Lincoln look like its trying too hard just to be a wannabe European car. Stick with names. They have heritage. Why do you think BMW, and Mercedes haven't changed the naming of their vehicles. C/E/S class, 3/5/7 series, why because those names have heritage. Problem with Domestics is they make too many half assed attempts at re-inventing themselvs and end up making a flop out of names it used for years and forces them to change naming altogether. How can you establish history, heritage, and pedigree if you can't stop changing things up and re-doing design themes and styling every 4 years. BMW's are instantly recognizable. Certain stying cues remain after many years. the 4 headlights, kidney grill, hofheimer kink (I know I spelled that badly), and the same line that intersects with the door handles and runs from the front fender through the door handles to the rear fender. Pick a good solid theme and stick with it and let it evolve over generations.

Couldn't have said that better. Although Cadillac made somewhat of a turn around, the way they threw part of their heritage in the trash by ditching classic names was beyond stupid.

On a side note: Then again, would someone have bought the CTS if it was named Cimmaron or Catera? O_o

Ford is finally breathing fresh life into Lincoln!
The new design is original, creative and looks fantastic!

Lincoln will be very successful with this new generation. Also, Lincoln should grab a huge amount of Caddy's customers with this handsome and exciting car!

The sleeper has awakened!
