DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Now If THIS Is The Honda Accord Coupe, What's This Mean For The Sedan?
One of the big debuts on day two of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show was the Honda Accord Coupe Concept. Though many panned it for looking very similar to the current-generation product, one thing that one of our commenters here picked up on struck me.

Lacman noted:

"If Honda applied the coupes styling to the sedan (even as a sport trim level) it would fly off the lots."

Being that the Accord Coupe Concept is a show car, it is only natural that the vehicle is a bit embellished from what would likely be a production model; however, would some of these flashier details inject a bit of much-needed life into the Accord sedan?

You have to admit that this concept has a strong side profile and if similar cues were applied to the sedan, it would give it a more stylized appearance that is capturing buyer's hearts in today's market. Though there are conservative consumers, products that have been lighting up the sales charts are ones that have sportier appearances, are stylized and leave a lasting impression.

If Honda applies the Accord Coupe's elements to its conservative sedan, would that add enough spice to seduce MORE consumers and leave cars like the Hyundai Sonata in the dust?

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Honda needs to fire whoever is in charge of design. This looks like a bunch of bolt-on crap from AutoZone. The broad styling is marginally enhanced with some more aggressive creases on what is largely the SAME EXACT SHAPE as the last 8 years of Accord Coupes -- which has been unexceptional for equally as long. Then they add these cheesy fake chrome accents and these stupid looking LED ring lights on the bumper valance? I owned two Accord Coupes and loved them both ('94 and '01.) I then bought a Civic Si in 2007. Loved that too. Just seems like the company has completely lost their way.

I have no problem with Honda maintaining the basic profile if they clean up the details as they have on the coupe. And I agree that some of the junk hung on the bumper covers is cheap and gimmicky.
They claim to be trimming the size, which is good. Make it drive sportier like previous generations, improve the controls, center stack, etc.
I can do without all the new nanny electronic crap. Make that stuff optional, at least.

Look-The new Civic has been universally panned for looking more like a mid cycle refresh then an all new design. In addition it is critisized for having cheap interior materials. Looking at this Accord Coupe it is clear that this is basically a mid cycle refresh. The grill, head lamps, and tail lamps are new. Further there are some glitzy looking metal trim piece add on's.However this is the show car. You know the production car will be toned down. Taking that into context you really can't say this is a brand new car. In fact Hyundai's Genesis Coupe, which is not considered a new car, shows similar if not more changes to the exterior then this Accord Coupe. So Honda has decided to take the Porsche route this time. Well that's their call. If Honda had an exclusive product market like Porsche I would say they could easily get away with it. Unfortunately they are in a hotly contested mid size sedan market. We have not seen the sedan. However unless Honda does a 4dr coupe sedan look (A la Audi A7)we may end up seeing the same Accord sedan being claimed to be a new vehicle. To me the current sedan looks bloated and frumpy. Not significantly changing and updating it's 2 bread and butter products Accord and Civic does not bode well for Honda now.

Appearance is of minor consequence. The biggest failure of the new Civic is everything else. It should be 40 mpg on the road. It's handling is not as crisp as the last one, yet the ride is not much better either.
Honda insists on continuing the stupid dash, nav needs an update, etc.

If the Accord is improved on the points that matter, the styling won't be a big deal. At one time GM led the industry in styling but the product was never great. So I stopped buying cars for their looks a long time ago.

Point taken irishmike. However if there not much of a change to suspension tuning, track, wheelbase and interior then it's the same car in slightly altered clothes. We will have to wait and see how they drive.

We still don't know what the sedan looks like.
