Denver Now Using Red Light Cameras To Ticket Drivers That Stop At Red Lights
Last April, the city of Denver became the first jurisdiction in Colorado to allow a private company, Affiliated Computer Services, to issue red light camera tickets to stationary vehicles. Issuing tickets to stopped drivers only required a simple software change, but it boosted the city's profit fourfold.

One of those ticket recipients, who asked not to be identified, drove his Toyota Prius on August 27 at the intersection of Newark Boulevard and Jarvis Avenue. He pulled up to the intersection at a speed of 16 MPH with his turn signal activated. He came to a full stop and waited for several seconds for traffic to clear before proceeding. His front tire crossed the first line of the crosswalk, which Newark and Redflex contend is a serious violation of the law. At 9:42pm, there were no pedestrians visible anywhere near the intersection. Though the Prius driver was outraged at receiving the ticket, he decided to plead guilty before a judge known for reducing turning tickets to $110 rather than risk losing the full $480.

wow, instead of doing something good for the society our government keeps finding way of robbing the society.

Stop it 009, or we'll be forced to move down to Mexico! People's Republic of Maryland is worse -- it has speeding cameras, red light cameras, traffic cameras, aggressive drivers cameras, helicopter cameras, balloon cameras, stealth drone cameras, white Jeep cameras, unmarked Crown Vic, Camaro and Durango cameras, construction zone cameras, behind-the-signs cameras, EZ-Pass sensors, induction sensors, weight sensors, static radar, mobile radar, wako staties standing in the middle of the highway aiming a laser gun in your eyes, etc, etc.

May have to vote for Ron Paul after all.

Mark my words, they will soon expand it to people that approach the intersection too quickly or too slowly as dangerous driving. It is all about grabbing the cash.Tthis is easy money.

So here is a scenario. Washington state says you can't challenge red light tickets, you have to pay.

So what happens at a red light?

1. You fail to stop - get a ticket
2. You stop but in the crosswalk so you can see when it is safe to turn - get a ticket
3. You approach the intersection at too high of a speed - get a ticket.
4. Any combination of above - you get more than one ticket.

So you approach the intersection slowly to avoid above? Nah they will soon be able to ticket you for impeding the flow traffic. (they missed that money grab)

So you protest and don't pay? The court has you arrested and the traffic camera company dings your credit.

Wow!

You know in the UK people frequently sabotage the cameras making them cost-prohibitive to operate. Poor some gasoline and set them a blaze, paint them shut, put a plastic bag over them, turn them away, knock them down, etc. This may start happening in this law-abiding country. People can only put up with so much crap.

Why don't they just make it a toll road and collect with a smile.

OK, then they will tag you entering the tollway, then exiting it. They will then extrapolate the average speed and send you a ticket.

In order to avoid a ticket, I have seen more people slam on their brakes to stop about 10' back from the crosswalk at 6th and Kalamath and 6th and Lincoln than is believable. Frankly, It is just plain dangerous.

If a right turn on red is legal at this particular intersection then the camera certainly should not be issuing tickets. Perhaps this intersection is one of those where you can't actually turn right on red?

I believe the right turn was ticketed since he stopped on the line. Which is stupid because you have to pull forward in order to see oncoming traffic. Encouraging people to stop farther away from the corner will only lead to an increase in accidents as people won't see oncoming traffic as well.

Sorry Joe, but you've got to stop behind the line first, then you can inch forward as required to see. The dude made a pretty bad stop (with the typical regenerative-braking glee of many Prius drivers).

I wouldn't want to get a ticket from one of these, but who does. That said, though, I'm not sure they would exist if so many drivers weren't overly-zealous about "making the light" as they probably make up the bulk of red-light violations and are really the only ones that these systems can claim to deter (never mind whether it's improves safety or not).

I know you can pull past it after you've come to a complete stop, but isn't that a bit pointless/wasteful? Hitting the gas pedal to get moving only to stop a few feet later? At ever right hand turn... for every vehicle on the road. That's a lot of waste...

Don't go to Denver. Don't drive through Denver. Maybe when the tourism dollars stop flowing they will get the message that we don't like being vicitmized by Red Light Traps. The folks in Denver need to throw out those who are responsible.
Complain to AAA.
Mount a Facebook and Twitter campaign.

In 2013 all cars are required to have a black box...soon after you will pay a fee per mile of use to pay for roads (and politcian's pet projects), have a ticket mailed to you each time you exceed posted speed
limit, get a ticket for a rolling stop, a fee for entering a conjested zone at certain times, etc etc. Big government here and abroad are out to get car owners...an unlimited source of revenue disguised by ways to get people into public transit which sucks anway.
