Gender Bender? Study Shows Men Stink At Driving Compared To Women

In the proverbial battle of the sexes, women are better drivers than men. Or so says a new study by an online auto insurance group that hopes to dispel the long-standing notion that women are bad drivers.

Some 80 percent of all fatal and serious car crashes are caused by male drivers, the study says. It says women are 27 percent less likely than men to cause auto accidents. In 2007, statistics reveal men were involved in 6.1 million car accidents while women were involved in 4.4 million.

Male drivers outnumber females 3 to 1 for DUI violations, according to the study.

Don't males drive 63% more then women?

So that 39% greater accident rate is most likely attributed to more miles behind the wheel. Gender bias behind the wheel is pretty much 50/50.

DUI convictions doesn't surprise me though. But it kind of makes a point. Even with this terrible statistic hindering the male average, females still net more accidents per mile.

Not sure how rigorous the study was, but it sure was a very poorly-written article. As you mention, accidents-per-mile is more important than percentage-of-accidents in determining which gender drives better. The other is the type of driving done since it relates to the general risk level. For example, if this study includes commercial driving (predominantly done by men) then it's no surprise the percentages would be higher. Furthermore, I'd wager that when a couple decides to travel in foul weather or after drinking, the man is generally given the task, however ill-advised.

The guy who wrote this was more interested in his wife's reaction than what's out there in the real world. A personal and continuous survey of
one (me) by simply looking in my rear view mirror is that more women talk
on phone, text (their eyes are looking down), talk with their hands, talk while looking at their passanger, eat, drink, and put on mascara than men.
I've pulled over dozens of time because woman behind me scared the hell out of me by not paying attention. I love women, support women, been married to the same wonderful women for decades but no one will convince me they are better drivers...particularly the youngest and oldest ones.

A very stupid study..men drive a lo more and of course we are bolder so most like to have accidents cause women most of the times do not take any risk..

"Better" needs to be defined as "safer" - yes, women drive more cautiously and conservatively, but they are not "better" drivers in terms of the ability to control a car like it's an extension of your body. Men generally are more comfortable parallel parking, backing up, driving bigger cars, etc., but it is because men are more confident drivers, they take more risks and of course, more risks means more likelihood in getting into accidents.

No, women as a group do not drive better, just safer.

I call BS on this. First of all women are not as capable on average at controlling a vehicle, especially during aggressive or defensive driving maneuvers. They lack the knowledge and mechanical understanding and dynamics of a car to actually control a vehicle in a spin or during and abrupt emergency maneuver. And almost every close call I have ever had has been with a woman on the phone or texting and not paying attention. They don't understand lane discipline, the importance of turn signal usage and driving to the right and not blocking the left lane going slower than traffic in the right lanes.

Study, like opinion polls, can still be manipulated. The fact that the study itself says that men drive more miles, but does state that this discrepancy was accounted for and the results adjusted means that this study may have issues.

this clearly proves we can't always take articles with the title "studies show..." as serious facts

Men have more accidents because women cause them by not paying attention and running us off of the road or pulling out in front of us.

Accident statistics should be measures in "target metric" miles, in other words, "the number of incidents per 100,000 gender-miles driven."

For example, if male drivers outnumber women drivers 3 to 1, and male drivers drive on average 60% farther annually that females, then you'd expect there to be 4.8 time more incidents involving male driver than females, assuming both genders were EQUAL in all driving respects.

This article also presents some apparently contradictory information. For example, if 80% of accidents are allegedly "caused" by males (20% by females, of 5:1 ratio), how can women be "27% less likely". The math just doesn't jive.

"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." -- Mark Twain

Lots of shoddy "reasearch" going on, and even shoddier "reporting."

I agree with the posters that cited manipulation of the results in this study.

1. More men on the road than women.
2. More men in the workforce than women.
3. Men drive faster.

They seem to be the ones that are always tailgating no matter how fast you are going . As far as getting pulled over , it seems that women are behind the wheel when the oficer is making a " citizens contact report" or gettting a ticket I should say
