Iowa Lawmakers Considering A Constitutional Ban Of Red Light Cameras - Should Others Follow?
Lawmakers in Iowa are kicking off the new year with a serious attempt to end the use of red light cameras and speed cameras in the state. A half-dozen cities use the devices even though the legislature did not grant local jurisdictions the authority to allow for-profit companies to issue traffic tickets through the mail. Instead, the Iowa Supreme Court in 2008 declared such systems could be used.

To undo that ruling, state Representative Jeremy Taylor (R-Sioux City) on Wednesday introduced what would be the country's first-ever state constitutional ban on the use of cameras. The measure would have to be enacted by two consecutive sessions of the legislature before being placed on the ballot for the approval of a majority of Iowa voters.

Of course they should. It goes against the innocent until proven otherwise clause, here you have a machine that whenever it tickets you, assumes the "owner" of the vehicle is guilty of braking the law.

I really don't care if I commit a violation and get a ticket. That would be my fault.

However for me to get a ticket when another authorized driver is driving the vehicle is not cool.

This is just another example of "Big Government".

People here seem to be confused about weather or not if we need government regulations. One day it's; "Leave the free market alone, Gov't regulations are stifling growth and preventing the free market from creating jobs", and the next day they support Government regulations.

Pretty sure, this is another reduction in the amount of government interference. If they made a new law to dissolve the armed forces, would that be a reduction in Government control or an increase (since it's another law)?

We don't need more Government. Government should stay out and allow the free market to do whatever they want to do. The Government has no right to tell the Red Light Camera Companies what to do. Government is the problem here, not the Red Light Camera companies.

Lexsucks, without government support you wouldn't have to pay the fees mailed to you by these companies. If I started a company mailing out fines to people that haven't shoveled their side walk, there wouldn't be anything I could do to enforce these "fines" and get paid. The same is not true with traffic ticket companies, they would be harmless if it were not for the government enforcing their payment.

- Aren't you for a Private Police Force?

I am, in such a system if said police force started enforcing such payments, they would go out of business and a more socially in tune company would take their place. Why would anyone pay somebody for a service they don't want?

Maybe the best course might be for a class action suit on the red light camera companies for 1000's of false accusations.

I'm not sure why people here are upset about this? This is just the free market doing what it does when unchecked. Folks that believe in a free market with no gov't rules shouldn't be upset. This is what you were asking for. Enjoy!!

Lexsucks, I know you detest the tickets, but your anger is misplaced.

So this is all the Governments fault? For enforcing the ticket payment? The Red Light Camera Companies are in no way at fault for anything? Correct?

Correct. Without support, there wouldn't be an industry for these companies.

They need them here where I live. Here, unlike most other places there is no delay between when the east/west lights turn red and the north/south turn green. They switch an the exact same time, and sometimes the light turns green a small fraction of a second before the other turns red, and the idiots here still run the lights. Many times after the light turns green 3 or 4 idiots will still run the light and make the left turn, so Hell yeah, bring on the red light cameras! it would prevent alot of accidents here in Louisiana, home of the stupidest drivers in the U.S. When I got stationed here in 2001 my insurance went up big time, but it didn't take long for my to see why. these people are the most idiotic drivers I have ever seen. they drive 30 in a 45, drive slow when its nice outside and drive 80 when its snowing (which very rarely happens here so you know they don't know how to drive in it)or pouring rain. they don't signal when they change lanes. Instead they will cut you off with no signal, get into the left turning lane, come up to the light and then put their left blinker on. How stupid can you get! and they can't grasp the concept of staying out of the left lane if you are going to go below the speed limit. I wish I could make every one of the idiots that do this go to a driving class where they are actually taught the rules of the road and lane discipline, rather than the crap they teach in drivers ed.
