Chrysler Sourcing Dodge Dart 6 Speed Transmission From Hyundai
We heard, and Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik confirmed, that the Korean automaker will supply Chrysler with six-speed automatic transmissions for use in the new Dodge Dart. While it’s not uncommon for a manufacturer to source components from an outside supplier, it does seem a bit peculiar to see Chrysler and Hyundai pairing up again so soon after the recent split of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA), a joint manufacturing concern the pair shared with Mitsubishi.

To be fair, it's an economy car, and the 6speed is supposed to be cheap compared to the 9 speed available in the car.

Isn't the 40mpg with the 9speed? I don't think they'll be claiming such lofty goals for the 6speed.

The 1/23 issue of AUTOWEEK cover says "NEW DODGE DART ROCKS DETROIT SHOW". It should have said "DETROIT SHOW THROWS ROCKS AT NEW DODGE DART".

Actually, Hyundai Mobis is the 10th largest global parts supplier. They currently build the front axle assemblies or the Jeep Wrangler, so this sourcing deal shouldn't come as any surprise.

GovMtrs08, Yea, Thats why Chrysler has received more significant automotive awards in 2011 than any other manufacture. Thats why Chrysler has had the largest percentage of steady sales increase [with less fleet sales] than anyone. Chrysler has in a very short period of time revamped there line-up receiving over the top praise from the press. And BTW, the Obama Admin would have never let Chrysler go into forclosure when it had the opportunity to put the controlling stake in the hands of the Union.

To clarify my comment on "less fleet sales", I mean Chrysler itself has decreased it's amount of fleet sales.

How do you decrease fleet sales? Do they refuse to sell cars to Hertz, Avis, Enterprise ETC? It would seem that instead, they just reduced how many Chrysler products they bought.

GovMtrs08, It was a sarcastic remark. And you have revealed yourself as a hater and not interested in having an intelligent auto conversation.
